There is so much more to Gabe than you can see in all the other books. Yes, he’s funny and a bit of a man whore. Yes, he’s the “good cop” to Reid’s “bad cop”. And yes he has his secrets. He’s got a dark side he keeps just under the surface. You know it’s there and that it’s not just because of his evil father. This darkness has a female written all over it and no one knows who or why.All it takes to bring out the other facets of Gabe are a feisty, independent redhead named Abigail. It seems damaged attracts damaged. Her secrets are dark and dangerous but she needs his help. Wants his help. Wants him. The two are magnets, drawn to each other. So much push and pull, each trying to protect the other. In addition to the obvious alpha she elicits in him, the dog-whispering romantic is somewhat astounding, and yet not.But His Demand is not just a romance, it’s suspense. Her past and his have merged to take her down and threaten her very existence. Trust is completely missing between them but protecting the other from this evil is in the forefront. Both will go to any lengths it seems in their protection. All it takes is one phone call. Who threw down the gauntlet? As always, I can easily lose myself in Lisa Renee Jones’ books but now I need Her Submission!

Oh wow....Gabe and Addie are hot. His Demand is full of intrigue, secrets you know that need to come out and is steam. Gabe goes after what he wants. He is strong and powerful. But you see this side of him you don't expect to see once Addie is in the picture. I love that commanding sweet side that takes over when Addie is near. Addie you can tell from the beginning that something is up with her. She isn't a stranger to powerful men. But one kiss with Gabe and she is a goner. I love that she keeps trying to run from this connection. Gabe and Addie have this wonderful instant connection that you can't but help but to love. Together they are strong and a perfect fit. His Demand will keep you glued to the pages and you wont be able to put it down. I for one can not wait to see what both Gabe and Addie are hiding and who is behind everything Addie is running from. I really wish for the next book Her Submission like now. If the next one is anything like this one, then that is an instant one click. Go one click this one just to see what I'm talking about.

I have read every book associated with the Tall, Dark and Deadly Walker Brothers and their sexy AF Walker Security associates..probably my favorites of all, what's not to love when all those hot, sexy alphas are vying for your attention. I've been enjoying all the players and legal maneuvering (creative rule bending??) in the Dirty series and now Dirtier duet. I've had my eye on Gabe Maxwell through many of these books as he wows from the background in them, but now it's all about him..yay Lisa Renee!Gabe finds himself pondering his lonely personal life after his perpetually single brother Reid's wedding on this very night. Thinking is not helping so he heads into his favorite bar, spending some time with a familiar bartender and a few fingers of excellent whiskey. As Gabe scans the bar, his eyes lock on a gorgeous redhead sitting alone. The night is now looking up and of course, he pursues his mark for the evening, but what if what he wants to happen doesn't? Gabe, like his brother, like most of his friends, is not one to take no for an answer or let someone like her get away, but he is so pissed to discover, as he chases her down, that's exactly what happens. Gabe Maxwell doesn't get ditched and it's all he can think about now!Of course, if you've read any books by this author, you know she will give her bossy alpha heros a chance to do what they do best...defend, protect and go a bit caveman while doing all of that! I'll admit, it's fun to watch. They can rescue this damsel any time they want! Hot moments between the sheets and anywhere else for that matter are not off the table either. I loved it, loved that sexy Gabe, couldn't wait to see how demanding he really was 'behind the scenes'!One thing that was driving me a little crazy was Abbie, that red headed little ball of trouble. She had it stamped all over her...she was in, out, yes, no, can and can't for a good portion of the book...Abbie, get a grip, Gabe Maxwell wants you girl..man up and make up your mind! He's funny, sometimes sweet and did I mention so HOT??Anyway, there is evil plotting, suspense and villanous interferences in play here to spice up the story and to keep our Gabe on his harda$$ game and how he relishes playing it! Now and then, glimpses of couples from previous stories pop in, which is always a major story enhancement for me. Gabe is just as I'd hope he would be, Abbie is growing on me ever so slightly and then BAM, that very unexpected secret bomb of hers, pulled out of nowhere, is dropped but not explained. There may just be more to her than I thought!!! Hoping I can stand waiting to see how the repercussions of the 'secret' plays out and the mysteries are solved in the conclusion of this duet ...and more Gabe please...wow!

Abbie is a strong independent woman with a past that keeps resurfacing. She believes the only way to leave it where it belongs is to hire Maxwell and Maxwell to assist and that is how Gabe comes into her life.We have previously met Gabe in the Dirty Rich series as Cat and Reid are his siblings. Gabe is a successful lawyer who is intrigued when he meets Abbie. He has a past of his own which he would like to remain buried. From the moment they meet they have an instant chemistry and connection however a power struggle exists between the couple. She believes that anyone close to her is in danger while Gabe would do anything to protect her. Gabe has a reputation as a ladies man so convincing Abbie that they belong together is more difficult than he imagined. The secrets and lies mount up around them and escalate into a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more of Abbie and Gabe.

I received an arc for an honest review. This is the first book in the Dirtier Duet. It’s about Gabe and Abigail or as Gabe calls her Abbie.Gabe first runs into her first at a bar and they share a very passionate kiss. The next time he sees Abbie is at his office. But he misses her and goes to the bar where he originally ran in to her. They have secrets that they keep from each other. But she has an ex that is associated with one of Reid’s old clients and their father.Abbie keeps trying to run to keep Gabe safe since her ex is a bad man and doesn’t accept Abbie divorcing him and moving on.There are so many secrets between them, I am not sure if they will survive. The book ends with a big cliffhanger and I for one can’t wait for the next book to come out.

How Change Happens (The MIT Press), by Cass R. Sunstein

Review

It's often said that the only constancy in life is change. Cass Sunstein weaves threads from diverse traditions in behavioral science to explain how big shifts get started.―Angela Duckworth, Founder and CEO of Character Lab and Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania; author of Grit: The Power of Passion and PerseveranceIf you think you'd like to change something―another person, an organization, or even your society―then try this test: Pick up this book and read five pages. If you don't have your eyes opened with a fresh insight or useful tool, well, you're probably not serious enough about making change.―Chip Heath, Professor, Stanford Graduate School of Business; coauthor of Switch: How to Change Things When Change is HardFor those lamenting the status quo, and questioning whether change is possible, Cass Sunstein provides a ray of hope. Integrating insights from his own, and others', research on topics such as social norms, group polarization, and pluralistic ignorance with his intimate knowledge of law and public policy, Sunstein provides a road map of how change can and does happen. Characteristically wise and erudite, How Change Happens is a must-read for those who want to understand, and help to instigate, social change.―George Loewenstein, Herbert A. Simon University Professor of Economics and Psychology, Carnegie Mellon UniversityMany prominent scholars write about why desirable changes occur in some contexts but not others. None brings to the challenge the breadth of Cass Sunstein, or his depth of insight into the complexities involved. How Change Happens provides a breathtaking tour of the vast intellectual landscape on the subject, bringing into focus critical elements of the topography and interactions among its features. Academics and the wider public alike will benefit from Sunstein's profound ideas, lucid exposition, and engaging writing.―Timur Kuran, Professor of Economics and Political Science, Gorter Family Professor of Islamic Studies, Duke UniversityCass Sunstein's new book is a tour de force exploring one of the most urgent problems of our time: how and why seemingly stable societal norms collapse and long-standing institutions come apart. Containing a feast of ideas on policy intervention, the book is bound to open up new avenues of research, and deserves to be read by students of economics, law, and politics.―Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor of International Studies, Cornell University

Great graphic novel. The story is detailed, compelling and moving. The art is fabulous - Andrew Robinson has a stunning ability to compose excellent panels that focus just on the face and then move to pop art and then transition to splash pages of full bodies and scenes. He varies the tone masterfully. At the halfway point, I thought that this would be an excellent movie. A note by the author at the end informs the reader that Mr. Tiwary is currently working on the screenplay version. This is an outstanding work of art.

Excellent artwork and a film worthy script that brings the essence of the relationship between Brian Epstein and his instrumental influence that brought about one of the greatest bands in rock -n-roll history to the world stage. The pop art 60's style woven into the narrative serves to bring the reader back to the decade that the story is set within, and the script doesn't sugar-coat or shy away from the struggles Epstein faced being a closet homosexual in an era where it was actually illegal! Actual dialogue from interviews with Epstein supplement an already convincing dialogue.Gripping, moving and masterfully done. A high water mark in biography books and another great example of the power of sequential art.

Holy Andrew C Robinson!!!!! If the story was trash, this book would receive a five star rating alone for the art. I cannot say or express enough how gorgeous of a book this is. It is breathtaking. That isn't to take away from Vivek Tiwary's story which is equal parts engaging, interesting, funny and ultimately tragic. This is by far one of the best Original Graphic Novel's I have ever read, and it should go down with all of the other classics like Watchmen or Persepolis.Even if you aren't a fan of The Beatles, this story will draw you in and hook you.

The art of this graphic novel was absolutely beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised by the humorous conversations of the Fab Four as well as the many song references dropped in the dialogue. I did feel as though the story skipped over a lot of important scenes and historical moments, and I would have liked to see Brian's relationships to other characters fleshed out a bit more (for example, how did he react when the band stopped touring?), but nonetheless, in less than 150 pages, Brian's life throughout the 60s was wonderfully illustrated. I will definitely read this again, and would recommend it to any Beatles fan.

Beautiful art, great visual storytelling, dialog. Creators find visual ways of characterizing the inner life of Brian Epstein. Script makes some bold, unconventional moves to this end, necessitated by Epstein' secret life. I was really here for artist Robinson, a successful, but still grossly undervalued talent whose style and ability encapsulate what's best in the strongest artists working now.

What more can I say about this book?Beautifully illustrated by Andrew Robinson (with a fun sequence by Kyle Baker detailing the Beatles' rather disastrous visit to the Philippines in '66), the story by Vivek Tiwary is a touching and quite informative look into the life of Brian Epstein. Robinson's art is nothing short of brilliant. The likenesses are astonishingly accurate yet still stylistic and the layouts and colors are sublime.May I suggest, for fans of this book, the equally wonderful VOODOO CHILD HC: The Illustrated Legend of Jimi Hendrix graphic novel by Martin I. Green with amazing art by Bill Sienkiewicz. It's available via third-party sellers on Amazon Marketplace at astonishing low prices and well worth it.

The story felt disjointed and lacking in insight. I suppose I would have preferred a straightforward historical account, but I think the more symbolic, poetic approach attempted by the author could've worked. It just didn't for me. Things seemed overly sentimental, and what should have come across as tragically sad played as comically pathetic. The art was fairly beautiful. I love Robinson's portraiture, figures, and color palette. However, the Beatles often seemed a little stiff and unemotive in their facial features, which I attribute to an unfortunate slavishness to capturing likenesses. Also there were too many talking head panels. Nonetheless, superb artwork.

If I had read anything else I would have been disappointed for the rest of the year. This was an awesome tale behind the tale of the worlds greatest band. Brian Epstein was the man behind the curtain with none of the theatrics of the wizard, he was just kind and a true believer. The story flowed and had no spots that were extra, the story had an ease and poetry to it. The art was tremendous, Andrew Robinson kills it. You should read this novel.

This was hands down the best book I read in 2013. I enjoy the Beatles but am not a huge fan however I love graphic novels and a good story. This book was a perfect combination of two of my biggest passions comics and music. I can't express enough how much I loved the story and art in this book. Robinson's art on every panel is gorgeous and the writing hooked me from the first panel. If you are a Beatles fan this book is a must read or if you enjoy good art and music!

I write this review today as I am purchasing this book for an acquaintance that has lost her spouse. This book was given as a gift to me when I was widowed at the age of 27 after losing my husband in an accident, and being left to raise our infant daughter on my own. I have read many books on grieving and recovering from the loss of a spouse and this was by far the most helpful to me. I opened it up about a week after my husband's death, read the introduction and found it was just too much- I recoiled at the notion there could ever be happiness again much less a full life and the mere thought of another marriage made my physically ill. Another few weeks went by and I picked it up again, drawn to the idea that there could be an "other side" to such pain and misery, and wanting desperately to stop hurting. This became my go- to book. I would read as much as I could process at the time and would then put it away, only to return to it when I was ready to continue the journey. I read this book many times, the last time after I became engaged to be married again. It was hard but I found that other side of grief, where you can continue to love and cherish the time and memories of the person you lost, and yet go on to live a full life again. I am now happily married and have been blessed with more children. I have purchased many copies of this book and have given them out as the unfortunate occasion arises. I have had deep friendships forged with fellow widows because I reached out with this book and have witnessed some stories similar to my own unfold. I buy this again today with the hope and prayer that another widow would be successful in getting to the other side of grief.

As a grieving husband who lost his beloved wife of 35 years this book gave me insight and the tools to begin a successful journey thru grief. It was so helpful to understand the process I was emotionally experiencing all the while confirming I wasn't going nuts. Waves of tears and sadness that I am not used to experiencing or exhibiting, especially in front of others, we're normal. This book gave a 62 year old widow permission to grieve & a plan with purpose to get to the other side sooner rather than later. I am a born again Christian and very much needed a book with my world view to minister to me.

Before I read this book I read a negative but very popular review. Now that I've read the book, I believe the author of that review, in her pain and suffering, misread what the author of the book actually said. What he said is what is actually in the bible. Death entered the world when Adam and Eve were put out of the Garden of Eden. Half the book is about a very specific kind of spiritual belief. If you can't handle Genesis this is not the book for you.The practical half of the book, which is very clearly marked as being written by the therapist is excellent for anyone. The spiritual half of the book is clearly written for a specific segment of the general population. Although I don't belong to that segment of the population I found what the Pastor had to say useful anyway. Both of the authors lost their first spouses, both of them after marriages long enough to have raised children to adulthood. They have been where their readers are and what they have to say, both the practical things and the spiritual things, are helpful if you are trying to work your way to the other side of grief.

Although I am not widowed yet (husband has advanced Alzheimer's) the authors helped me immensely. My sorrow and grief were unbearable when I first started reading, but am so much better now. I am able to visit my husband knowing the best is being done for him and when he dies I will hopefully be equipped to handle the huge loss. I may have to re-read the book!

I ordered this book for myself after checking it out of the "library" at a GriefShare Support Group. My 43yo husband died suddenly and unexpectedly and I have been clamoring for information about how to get through this, over this, past this, around this pain. I am learning that it doesn't work that way. What I like about this book is that you get more than one perspective, the man explains what he went through and what helped him as a male and as a pastor. The woman explains things from a female perspective and is a clinical psychologist. I just felt there was so much to take away from the way it was presented, I read the whole book in 2 nights. It may not be for everyone because it is a Christian based book, but I really appreciated the different ideas on various areas of grieving. There is no "answer" book, although I keep looking, but I feel this book is pretty practical and yet genuinely supportive. There were parts where I didn't relate or agree, but I was not offended because I understood it was just a presentation of another perspective and I gained in other areas. I feel it's a book you need to reference at different times during your grief because the end focuses on "the end" when you feel healed and ready to move on. And since I'm not there yet, I will have to go back to that part at a later date. All in all, a practical, supportive read.

While i appreciate the intent of the authors the book lacked continuity for me. After losing my wife a month earlier my mind was confused enough without switching between clinical analysis and spiritual guidance in every chapter. It was like spaghetti sauce on ice cream. I like them both, but not together. Hopefully it was more useful for others. On to another book!

Review

“This is a splendid, weird, moving novel…It manages beautifully that trick of embracing the surreal in order to underscore and emphasize the real - not as allegory, but as affirmation of emotional truths that don’t conform to the neat and tidy boxes in which we’re encouraged to house them.” (NPR.org)““The book is charming and absurd - think “This American Life” meets “Alice in Wonderland.” (Washington Post)“Longtime listeners and newcomers alike are likely to appreciate the ways in which Night Vale, as Fink puts it, “treats the absurd as normal and treats the normal as absurd.” What they might not foresee is the emotional wallop the novel delivers in its climactic chapters.” (Austin Chronicle)“The hit podcast is absurd and hilarious, and as a book it’s similarly entertaining…” (The Guardian)“Fink and Cranor’s prose hints there’s an empathetic humanity underscoring their well of darkly fantastic situations. . . . the book builds toward a satisfyingly strange exploration of the strange town’s intersection with an unsuspecting real world.” (Los Angeles Times)“Welcome to Night Vale lives up to the podcast hype in every way. It is a singularly inventive visit to an otherworldly town that’s the stuff of nightmares and daydreams.” (BookPage)“As a companion piece, “Welcome to Night Vale” will be hard to resist. Though the book builds toward a satisfyingly strange exploration of the strange town’s intersection with an unsuspecting real world, its mysteries - like the richest conspiracy theories - don’t exist to be explained. They just provide a welcome escape.” (Detroit Free Press)“The charms of ‘Welcome to Night Vale’ are nearly impossible to quantify. That applies to the podcast, structured as community radio dispatches from a particularly surreal desert town, as well as this novel, written by the podcast’s co-creators, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“This is the novel of your dreams. . . . A story of misfit family life that unfolds along the side streets, back alleys and spring-loaded trap doors of the small town home you’ll realize you’ve always missed living in. When it says ‘welcome,’ it’s mandatory. You belong here.” (Glen David Gold, author of Carter Beats the Devil and Sunnyside)“Welcome To Night Vale brings its eponymous desert town to to vivid life. . . . It is as weird and surreal as I hoped it would be, and a surprisingly existential meditation on the nature of time, reality, and the glow cloud that watches over us.” (Wil Wheaton)

Praise for Welcome to Night Vale“This is the novel of your dreams. . . . A friendly (but terrifying) and comic (but dark) and glittering (but bleak) story of misfit family life that unfolds along the side streets, back alleys, and spring-loaded trapdoors of the small town home you’ll realize you’ve always missed living in.”—Glen David Gold, author of Carter Beats the Devil and Sunnyside“Those of us who have gotten to know Night Vale through Cecil Palmer’s biweekly radio broadcasts can finally see what it’s like to actually live there. It is as weird and surreal as I hoped it would be, and a surprisingly existential meditation on the nature of time, reality, and the Glow Cloud that watches over us.”—Wil Wheaton“Take Conan’s Hyboria, teleport it to the American Southwest, dress all the warriors in business casual and hide their swords under the floorboards — that’s Night Vale: absurd, magical, wholly engrossing, and always harboring some hidden menace.”—John Darnielle, author of Wolf in White Van“I’ve been a fan of Welcome to Night Vale for years, and in that time writers Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink have delighted me with stories that are clever, twisted, beautiful, strange, wonderful, and sweet. This book does all of that and so much more. It’s even better than I’d hoped. I think this might be the best book I’ve read in years.”—Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind“This small town full of hooded figures, glowing clouds, cryptically terrifying public policies, and flickering realities quickly feels more like home than home. . . . There is nothing like Night Vale, in the best possible way.”—Maureen Johnson, author of 13 Little Blue Envelopes and The Name of the Star“They’ve done the unthinkable: merged the high weirdness and intense drama of Night Vale to the pages of a novel that is even weirder, even more intense than the podcast.”—Cory Doctorow, author of Little Brother and coeditor of Boing Boing

Be careful. After exactly 7.457 plays on Side 1, it turns into a live hive of bees. I haven't gotten to that many plays on Side 2. It was humming a lot from the other room, though. I've placed in an air-tight ziplock in the meantime.A+++ Very much enjoyed!!!

I've always wanted to listen to Night Vale an old stereo and now I can! It even summons cats!(Cat summoning may vary)

I found this book in my fridge, I sat down and turned the pages, absorbing knowledge, all in all its a great novel.

I do not remembering buying this book. It appeared on my coffee table one morning smelling of rotting meat and ash.Someone keeps leaving pages from it under my pillow while I sleep. Every morning a new one. They are not in order.

A lot of people try to describe Night Vale to those who are unfamiliar, but it isn't easy. Most will resort to comparisons invoking such iconic fictional universes as The Twilight Zone or Twin Peaks. I think I will try this one: It's the monstrosity that would slither from the depths to possess the newborn soul if Douglas Adams had a baby with H.P. Lovecraft. It's absurd, it's funny, it's horrifying, and it's heartbreaking.I'm a long-time follower of the podcast this book is based on, so I of course appreciated its regular interjections from Cecil and the cameos from (and new insights into!) such town regulars as Old Woman Josie, Carlos the Scientist, Mayor Dana Cardinal, and that guy Steve Carlsberg. (Get it together, Steve.) And of course I like callbacks to the Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home, the Glow Cloud, and the town rivalry with Desert Bluffs, as well as Cecil's continual smugness about how hot and talented his scientist boyfriend is. All the in-jokes are there for us, while just being random weirdness if you're new to the world: You pay your bill at Big Rico's with a certain strange ritual, crises generally resolve before Cecil is done reporting on them, and mountains aren't real (or maybe they are, but that's controversial). And some food is invisible.Plot-wise, it's lovely to follow characters for much longer than a podcast episode--and see things through their perspective without necessarily feeling that Cecil is narrating their experiences--and I enjoyed how everything was weird and not necessarily satisfying but still leaves you with that feeling that Something Happened. But it's not just weird; it's got some honestly gorgeous images in it that smack you sideways unexpectedly. It's haunting. I'll share some of these quotes at the end, where the concepts are both bizarre and beautiful. The scene of Diane and Jackie joining forces to escape the library was incredibly exciting, and their relationship was deliciously complicated--as was Jackie's relationship with her mother--and it was funny that the cover art on a biography of Helen Hunt tried to attack them. Oh, and remember, scientists are pack animals, and you have to whisper a secret into the car's cup holder to start the ignition. It's just really interesting that the book hits the nail on the head about Cecil's voice letting us let things go. We let go of questions even as his voice brings us more of them. Also, the tradition continues for intern work at the radio station to be a dangerous job with a high mortality rate. Not to mention one of your duties is editing Cecil's slash fiction. Before I share my favorite quotes, I want to talk about some of the important social points in this book. Most notably, it deals heavily with a father who abandoned his partners and children, how those mothers who raised those children coped, how the father cannot expect to just reappear after the hard work is done and be equally important to the children, and how said father can still be a helpful, useful, "good" person while still having done something that damaged his families. This was represented with the character Troy literally being multiple versions of himself, dozens of Troys everywhere, without a single one staying to raise his children. I loved Diane's speech regarding her son's wanting to find his father: I raised you for fifteen years. I fed you and clothed you. I loved you and still do. I love you because you have been with me for fifteen years. I am your mother because we have been together your whole childhood. I have earned you as my son. Troy does not get to be your father simply because he participated in your creation. Troy does not get to earn your love as a son because you are biologically his. I have done the work. I have put in the time. I have loved you. Troy does not get to be my equal in your life because he has not earned it. I need to protect myself. And I need to protect you. This is incredibly relevant to anyone who's raised a child after the other partner left, and that's become common in many people's households. There is also a really interesting, related point in this story about how family is what becomes from the relationships you cultivate; a father is not a father just because he contributed genetic material, but someone who did not contribute genetic material can be more of a father sometimes. Characters who are not technically related can become like sisters because of what they develop. Many of us in the real world can relate to this too. It's also refreshing that when it's revealed Troy left Diane, Jackie makes a remark about Troy being bad because of it, which makes Diane feel validated. She'd always before felt that she was to blame for "making a mistake" by being with him, but the text explicitly puts the onus on Troy. Wonderful.Relatedly, I also really enjoy how consistently the character Jackie experienced condescension and dismissal because of others' perception of her age. As a perpetual nineteen-year-old, Jackie knows nothing but being discounted because of her supposed immaturity, and it was interesting how Diane's knee-jerk reaction was to boss Jackie around and immediately tune her input out. There was quite a lot of this, and after Diane learned how it felt to receive this treatment, she wasn't so hasty to dish it out to Jackie or her son. It's very important for adults to realize how their advice comes across and how easy it is to ignore someone's input if it's clear they don't respect you.And of course, in the midst of so many extremely weird things happening and extremely normal things being taken for weird, same-sex relationships are never invoked as odd at all. Pretty much every relationship or potential relationship just is what it is, with Diane being as willing to imagine that her son might have a crush on a boy as she was to imagine he might have a crush on a girl. And when her son thinks she might be dating, the potential relationship she calls out as a shield is a woman named Dawn, but her son believes she's saying "Don," and neither possibility is weird or remarkable. The words "gay," "straight," and "bisexual" are never used, and while some people think it's frustrating to have queer relationships without labeling them, I think it fits well with the tone. (Also, there is a sort of nod to asexuality in there; a character is describing what happens when kids grow up, and remarks, "and they get interested in boys and girls, or they don't, and anyway they change." No acknowledgment is made of nonbinary genders, but this was an unusual acknowledgment that growing up does not automatically mean we all form those kinds of relationships.)Okay, and these are my favorite quotes. On showering: You will smell must and soap, and feel a stab of panic about how alone you are. It will be like most showers you've taken. On angels: All of the angels in Night Vale live with Josie out by the car lot. There are no angels in Night Vale.On pet care: Now it was time to feed those items that were alive. Some of the items were alive. Some of them were dogs, and some weren't.On great deals: Get out to Lenny's for their big grand opening sale. Find eight government secrets and get a free kidnapping and personality reassignment so that you'll forget you found them!On Diane: Diane was like most people. Most people are.On avocados: The avocado was, of course, fake, as all avocados are.On invisible consumables: The Moonlite All-Nite Diner along Route 800 served okay coffee. Okay pies. Some of the pies and coffee were invisible, and, for the people who like invisible pie and invisible coffee, this was a real plus. Here's what: if you like a thing, and only one place in town serves that thing, you're going to be pretty excited by that thing, regardless of quality. On the Faceless Old Woman: The faceless old woman who secretly lives in their home crawled by on the ceiling, but neither of them noticed. On sponsored content: And now a word from our sponsors. Or not now, but later. Much later. You won't know it when it happens. It'll be just one of the many words you'll encounter that day. But it will come leaden with unseen meaning and consequence, and it will slowly spread throughout your life, invisibly infecting every light moment with its heaviness. Our sponsors cannot be escaped. You will see their word. And you will never know.On science fiction: No one knows why science fiction is kept separately from the rest of the nonfiction. Tradition is a powerful thing. These shelves were much less censored than the main nonfiction section, since science fiction tended to be about day-to-day stuff that everyone already knew.On the nature of the world: The world is terrifying. It always is. But Cecil reminded her that it was okay to relax in a terrifying world.More sponsored content: And now a word from our sponsors. Having trouble sleeping? Are you awake at all hours? Do birds live in you? Are you crawling with insects? Is your skin jagged and hard? Are you covered in leaves and gently shaking in the gentle breeze? You sound like a tree. You are perfectly healthy. Also, you don't need to sleep. You're a tree, a very very smart tree. Are you listening to the radio? Is a human assisting you? What plan do you have for our weak species? Please, tree, I beg of you to spare me. Please, tree. Spare me. This message has been brought to you by Old Navy. Old Navy: What's Going to Happen to My Family? On children: We don't have our children. We have the faint, distorted echoes of our children that this town sent back to us.

Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is the first novel in the Night Vale series (based off the popular podcast of the same name) written by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel expands the universe of the podcast as we follow two women, Diane Crayton and Jackie Fierro, whose (already weird) lives get turned upside down when a man in a tan suit with a deerskin briefcase gives them both a piece of paper with the words "KING CITY" written on it. Their individual quests for answers will lead them on a journey that will change how they look at themselves, and at their families. Read more…First things first, I adore this book. It's honestly everything I wanted it to be, and even more. Fink and Cranor do a great job of taking the absurdity and humor of the podcast and making it work as a novel. The novel isn't told from Cecil's point of view - like the podcast is - and that's the best decision they could have made. By changing the point of view, they've opened up the world of Night Vale more than ever. Now we have the chance to experience life as a "regular" citizen of Night Vale. And the fact that the book actually jumps between two points of view is even better, giving us a nice variety of characters and experiences. One point of view is that of Jackie Fierro, a pawn shop owner who has been nineteen for as long as she can remember. The other point of view is Diane Crayton, a mother of a son who can change his appearance at will and desperately wants to know information about his dad. The book alternates between their points of view in nearly every chapter, and it's utilized with panache, especially when Jackie and Diane start interacting with each other. I have a soft spot for stories that will show the same event from multiple points of view. The prose itself is reminiscent of the podcast, which itself is reminiscent of writers like Douglas Adams. Again, I think this was a smart move for Fink and Cranor to make. It can be hard making a transition from one medium of entertainment to another, especially when you're changing the entire format of the story. There was always the possibility that without Cecil as the narrator, this wouldn't have worked. But it does, partially because the prose is so reminiscent of the language used in the podcast that it feels like an extension of what fans already hear and love.As for the story itself, Welcome to Night Vale really is one of those books that defies genres. One part brilliant whodunnit, another part emotional family drama, another part absurdist humor, the book manages to combine a whole bunch of genres that often aren't combined into this melting pot of entertaining literature. The mystery itself is interesting enough, and it's only heightened by the excellent, dynamic characters written by Fink and Cranor. The story benefits from not tying itself too heavily into things that have happened in the podcast, aside from answering one of the biggest questions in the podcast: just who is the man in the tan jacket? People who have never heard the podcast before are given enough information about the man in the tan jacket for this part of the storyline to be meaningful, but fans of the podcast will really get a lot out of this as they uncover the mystery behind this well-known and beloved character. It's a quick and easy read, full of twists and turns and emotional moments that always end up feeling earned. No part of this book feels like a cash grab, adapting a popular property into another medium. Instead, it feels like a genuine expansion of the universe with an original, moving, and entertaining story to tell that couldn't have been told with the confines of the podcast.Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is an enjoyable read for anyone who is already a fan of the podcast. Part Twilight Zone, part X-Files, part This American Life, Night Vale manages to bridge all these disparate elements together into a cohesive and entertaining story that appeals to a wide audience. I recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction, absurdist humor, Douglas Adams-style books, is already a fan of the podcast, or who just likes a good whodunnit with excellently written dynamic characters.

I'm late to the Night Vale party. A friend recommended the podcast, but I didn't want to commit to wading through its hundreds of episodes, and I can read faster than most people talk. I caught this on sale, fortunately, because I don't think I will ever finish this book. Night Vale is weird for the sake of being weird. It reads like abstractionist, science fiction stream of consciousness. Reading it felt like work.

I got this for my sister and she does enjoy it

I love Celtic designs and this coloring book has many that will be great to color. There seem to be two major styles of designs in the book: the first is geometric patterns which will be fun to color but which are not what I think of when I think Celtic. There are only a few of these designs. The second style is very antique looking Celtic-inspired vignettes and whirling and twirling designs that I look forward to coloring. Some of these designs have intricate parts but for the most part, they are detailed rather than small and should be fairly easy to color. There are a couple of designs that will be more difficult for those whose eyesight or fine motor control is compromised. There is also an almost gray scale type finish to some areas which actually remind me of pointillism as it is made up of tiny black dots. On the whole, I think it is a great book and will provide fun and some challenging designs to color and really appeals to that small part of Irish in my genetic make up.The designs are printed on only one side of this good weight perforated paper. Creative Haven does an excellent job with their printing and their paper stock and I can count on them to be consistent. The binding is glued rather than sewn an pages are easily removed if you prefer to do so. The designs all stop well before the perforations so you won't lose any portion of the design if you remove it from the book. All of the designs have a framing line around them. I really appreciate when an artist does this as it gives me a natural stopping point and a more finished project when I am finished (not to mention saving me time and ink.)All of my markers, both alcohol and water-based bleed through this paper to some degree. My gels pens leave a color shadow on the back of the page but don't leak completely through to the following page. My coloring pencils work well as usual for Creative Haven paper and behave as I would expect depending on whether their core is soft or hard. I either remove pages before working on them or I put a blotter sheet under the page I am working on to keep ink from leaking through to the next page. My preference is chipboard but card stock, manilla folders, or several sheets of regular paper work as well. I will list the coloring medium that I test with in the comments section for anyone who is interested.

WOW!! I bought this book for my adult niece , who I is going through some challenges in her life right now. As we are also Irish, which is a plus but not required 😊, she was over joyed with the gift. I also but her the large selection a colored pencils so she has spent countless hours with it! They advertise these books as relaxing and calming...I am here to say that they hit the nail on the head in that way!!

Not bad. But why do so many of the celtic books have a sloppy, almost elementary look to the designs? I have purchased 6 now and they all seem to share this look as though it's on purpose. I would love to find one that had precision celtic symbols, they are so beautiful and intricate, wish they would be depicted as such...

I was a little disappointed by some of the designs. There are definitely some hard pictures in there to color. However I am looking forward to using it. Like that the designs are one sided, in case the ink flows through. For that I keep a piece of cardstock behind the page.

some designs are interesting, but most weren't as interesting as I'd hoped. it's got pages of plain geometrical shapes across the whole page... no celtic patterns in it at all (on those pages)... other pages do have the celtic patterns, imagery you'd expect and hope for, so that's awesome.

It takes a bit to get used to Celtic Knots. I discovered it is a good idea to line out each dragon in a knot to be sure you have not missed a segment. (A personal problem I am sure - grin)But this does allow you to play with a selection of colours to try an idea. I like to play with the borders before I try the pictures. Love it

Gorgeous! Page after page of excellently drawn designs, each as good as the one before. I'm finding myself hurrying to finish a page so I can start that other cool one I saw, then find three more for when THAT one is done! I do these with markers and love the effects I get. Creative Haven books are all perforated so removing one page to make it easier to color is simple and doesn't wreck the rest of the book. I avoid other brands for the most part unless they're something I really like the look of.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves her Celtic heritage just as I much as I love mine. It is a relatively small coloring book, which I have found is just the seemingly typical size for the publisher-not a poor quality issue. The paper is typical, not too thick or too thin. I would not personally buy this book for myself however, as the designs become a bit too repetitive for myself. Still, beautiful designs and a good little coloring book to relax with at the end of a day!

From the Back Cover

Jesus Creed 2017 Book of the Year"In this well-argued book, Matthew Bates recovers a deeper sense of what the act of faith consists of as it is depicted in Scripture. He wisely observes that the story of the rich young ruler in the Synoptic Gospels presumes that salvation depends on certain human actions. How those actions are related to salvation by faith alone is a central question raised by this book and elegantly answered."--Gary Anderson, University of Notre Dame"In this bold, provocative book, Matthew Bates challenges Christians of all traditions to reexamine basic assumptions about the gospel, grace, the nature of salvation, and the meaning of 'faith.' His argument for saving faith as embodied, enacted allegiance is rooted in solid scholarship and presented with both zeal for the kingdom and concern for the church. This is a much-needed corrective to many misunderstandings."--Michael J. Gorman, St. Mary's Seminary and University"Matthew Bates argues that faith or believing is not mere assent, not easy believism, but covenantal loyalty to the God who saves his people through the Lord Jesus Christ. Bates forces us to rethink the meaning of faith, the gospel, and works with a view to demonstrating their significance for true Christian discipleship. This will be a controversial book, but perhaps it is the controversy we need!"--Michael F. Bird, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia"Bates makes a powerful argument that the New Testament writings find their climax in their portrait of Christ as the enthroned king. The right response to this king is not simply trust or intellectual assent but rather wholehearted allegiance. Bates's reframing of faith, works, and the gospel is a necessary correction to prevalent distortions of Jesus's gospel. This is an important argument written by a creative, careful, and trustworthy biblical interpreter."--Joshua Jipp, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"[An] outstanding book. . . . The superficiality of American evangelicalism's gospel-obsession with security and assurance has led me at times to wonder if we should not teach justification by discipleship. Or justification by faithfulness. But Matthew Bates has landed on a beautiful and biblically sound term: allegiance."--Scot McKnight, Northern Seminary (from the foreword)

Perhaps there is no other word tossed around in Christian circles more than the term "faith." This is especially true when discussing matters of salvation - what is saving "faith"? Every Christian has a working definition, whether they've reflected on it or not.In this book, Matthew Bates presses readers to understand that the Greek terms "pistis" and "pisteuo" in the New Testament are best understood within the contemporary English concept of "allegiance." This is because the traditional term "faith" has come to be misconstrued by most Christians. In fact, he goes so far as to drop this bombshell in the opening pages: "English-speaking Christian leaders should entirely cease to speak of 'salvation by faith' or of 'faith in Jesus' or 'believing in Christ' when summarizing Christian salvation. For the sake of the gospel we need to revise our vocabulary" (p. 3).What follows is a tour de force in the arena of biblical theology. Bates devotes most of his energy to examining Paul's letters, although he also musters evidence from the remainder of the New Testament. The first half of the book deconstructs inadequate understandings of faith and then reconstructs a firmer understanding. Bates contends that saving faith/allegiance includes three dimensions: 1) intellectual agreement with the content of the gospel, the culmination of which is Jesus' enthronement as king; 2) confession of loyalty to Jesus in recognition of his reign; and 3) embodied fidelity as a citizen of Jesus' realm (i.e., actually living in a way that reflects loyalty to Jesus). Bates also tackles many of the potential objections that some might make against his proposal. The second half of the book explores the implications of "allegiance" in four related areas: eschatology, humans as the "image of God," justification/righteousness, and Christian living. While I might take issue with some of Bates' minor claims, I find his overall thesis about "allegiance" to be utterly compelling. It has the potential to re-orient the church in a direction that is truer to the message of Scripture. Highly recommended to pastors, students, and any Christian who wants a better understanding of the New Testament's teaching on what is entailed by "faith" in Jesus.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover. And I suppose that's usually true. But there are moments when a book's title seems to leap out at you. Seeing 'Salvation by Allegiance Alone' on Amazon's 'Recommended Reads' list was one of those moments.I immediately knew, by the title and subtitle alone (Salvation by Allegiance Alone: Rethinking Faith, Works, and the Gospel of Jesus the King), that this would not only be a book that I'd enjoy - it would be a book I could have written. And after finishing it, I can only confirm my initial thoughts. Matthew Bates' message here is exactly what the Church needs. For too long, we've been satisfied with a gospel that is less than gospel. We've assumed that scripture was written to us rather than for us. We've demanded answers to questions the Bible doesn't even address. And we have been left with a nice story that fits perfectly in our individualistic culture: Jesus died on the cross so my sins can be forgiven and I can go to heaven when I die. And all I have to do is agree with the statement, 'Jesus died for my sins.'We've traded bold, public confessions of 'Jesus is Lord!' for a hand quietly raised when all eyes are closed and all heads are bowed.May that gospel-that-is-no-gospel die a speedy death! And may it be replaced with the robust, world-transforming, Kingdom-proclaiming, Jesus-Is-Lord-Gospel that Scripture reveals and Matthew Bates sketches in Salvation by Allegiance Alone. If you're unfamiliar with Bates (as I was), you may be interested in knowing a little more about him. He doesn't accept any particular theological label (neither Calvinist nor Arminian, Catholic nor Orthodox). And he draws from a variety of scholars and sources (both N.T. Wright and John Piper are referenced, with agreement, in the footnotes). And though there are places where he sounds New-Perspectives-On-Paulish, he doesn't adhere to everything that people associate with that group (but who does, right? It's really too broad a label to be of much use). For example, he disagrees with Wright's interpretation of 'the righteousness of God' as 'covenant faithfulness.'Bates also reaches his hands out - full of olive branches - everywhere he can, by noting areas of agreement with traditional Protestant and Catholic theology. This is something I have a great deal of respect for. Error is seldom pure. It usually comes, like a poison, mixed with truth. Too often, we see an error and then assume that the opposite must be true rather than teasing out any truth that may lie under the surface.Bates is careful to tease out truth wherever he finds it.With that said, those Christians who are committed to a traditional reading of the text will have a hard time with what Bates writes here. He shakes things up. But even if you know you're going to disagree, I'd encourage you to read it anyway. If nothing else, he'll force you to think through more clearly what you believe - as well as why.So, what is Bates' argument? He begins, like Inigo Montoya in the Princess Bride, by telling us that though we keep using that word, faith, he doesn't think it means what we think it means. We have, in Bates' view, reduced the idea of faith down to mere mental assent. As if nodding my head after someone asks, "Do you believe Jesus died for your sins?" is all Paul had in mind when he said, "If you...believe in your heart that God raised Him out from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). This is, in my opinion, one of the strongest parts of the book.Bates marshals all of the ancient evidence available - Scripture and secular sources alike - to paint a more robust picture of faith. Faith isn't the opposite of good works. It isn't mere intellectual agreement. It isn't a positive attitude. Faith - especially in its saving form - is more akin to our modern idea of allegiance. One of the most powerful evidence of this, in my mind, is a story Bates quotes from Josephus' autobiography. Josephus, a general at the time, encountered a rebel leader whom he told "repent and believe in me" - using almost identical language to Jesus. And this isn't the only example of 'belief' or 'faith' referring to fidelity. There are dozens of others.Bates argues that the idea of pistis, the Greek word normally translated 'faith', includes three aspects: "intellectual agreement", a "confession of loyalty", and "embodied fidelity." This understanding is desperately needed in churches where faith has been simplified down to 'agreement.' Honestly, I felt like this part of the book alone is worth the price. If we're going to overcome the idea of 'cheap grace' that has pervaded the church over the past century, we're going to have to seek a fuller picture of faith.Bates also spends a sizable amount of time dealing with the question: what is the gospel? Here, he follows very much in line with N.T. Wright. The gospel is the story of Jesus' incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and enthronement. In other words, the gospel is a cosmic story that God calls us to enter. It isn't three-steps-to-salvation or the Romans Road. It's all about Jesus.Just as contemporary Christianity has flattened its understanding of faith, it's done the same thing to the Gospel. It's simplified and personalized it to the point that it barely reflects the truth behind it. Bates does an admirable job at arguing that Jesus' enthronement as King is central to the gospel - from Matthew through Revelation. Sadly, this central aspect has been largely left behind for many modern Christians. Today, it's all about Jesus' death on the cross.Don't get me (or Bates) wrong, Jesus' death is hugely important. But it would be just another death without his resurrection and enthronement. If we're going to accurately proclaim the Gospel, we must proclaim the whole Gospel.I was also happy to see that Bates included a whole chapter of common questions he gets when explaining his understanding of faith as allegiance. Unfortunately, some of his explanations only made me want to ask him more questions. Especially when discussing assurance and the place of works in the Christian life. Nevertheless, it's a good start.Though again, if you've been reared in traditional Protestant theology, you'll find plenty to disagree with here. Bates argues that we are judged based on our works (though to be fair, so does Paul - see Romans 2:5-8). He adeptly argues that Paul was not against works per se, but works as a system of salvation. I agree with Bates here. You may or may not.The idea of faith as allegiance is everywhere in the first five chapters. The next two, one focusing on 'heaven' and the other on 'the image of God', seem less directly involved in the allegiance discussion - though they are nonetheless excellent. Basically, Bates argues that our eternal home will be the new heaven and new earth; and the image of God is not something we have but something we are. If these ideas seem new to you, all I can say is read these two chapters. They're a great summary of a needed theological course-correction within much of evangelicalism. The eighth chapter focuses on how 'faith as allegiance' fits into the Biblical understanding of justification. I love the way he argues that trying to force scripture to give us an 'order of salvation' is an absurd endeavor. I happen to agree. The New Testament authors (and the Old Testament authors for that matter) were not systematic theologians. They were writing practical documents, not theoretical ones. Again, this is something that modern Christians - especially more theologically inclined ones - need to hear. For Bates, justification is rooted firmly in the idea of union-with-Christ. He deviates from the Calvinistic view of individual predestination (though he leaves the door open for its possibility) and instead points to a corporate view of election. God chose those who are in Christ - though they can enter or leave that union as an employee might join or leave a particular company. As long as one is in union with Christ, he is justified. In this, he commends both Catholics and Protestants for important contributions to a biblical understanding of justification. Though he also critiques both groups. He ends the book with a chapter on making the idea of 'faith as allegiance' practical. This is something that more theological books need to include. Though Bates doesn't expand nearly as much as I would have liked. He basically argues that we need to proclaim the Gospel as the full story it is and call people to discipleship - not just a sinner's prayer. Finally, he closes with a recommendation that I wholeheartedly endorse: making the Apostle's Creed a regular part of worship.I could say so much more about this book. I loved it.With that said, I feel like the chapters were a little out-of-order. They didn't flow as naturally into each other as they could have. For example, chapter eight should have been chapter five and everything else should have been pushed back.Likewise, his view of assurance felt flimsy to me though I think my disagreement has more to do with his wording than anything else.Ultimately, this is a book you'll either love or hate. If you believe we need to proclaim a more robust, Biblical Gospel - if you believe faith includes more than merely saying "I do" - if you believe Jesus is calling us to faith and faithfulness - if you like the phrase 'King Jesus' - you'll find much to love about this book.But...if your feet are firmly planted in the concrete of Reformed (or any other) tradition, you'll probably want to throw the book down and scream from time to time. But that's okay. Use it as an opportunity to return to scripture and judge your views - and Bates's - by God's revelation.May we all seek THE Gospel. And accept no imitations.
