The book just begins with pages to fill in. Other than that it seems to be a good book for the purpose! I searched through Amazon & the Internet to find vol 1, but found nothing! Confusing!

The first two essays are speeches given as Hettner Lectures in Geography at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, the last essay is a reflection on space as a 'keyword' in the sense of Raymond Williams. Together, this forms a small booklet of little more than 140 pages.The first essay, "Neo-Liberalism and the Restoration of Class Power", is an overview of the resurgence of neoliberalism in recent decades, and the deleterious effects this has had both practically and in academics. Much of this is known to any leftist and the same sort of thing can be found in any radical blog.The second essay is "A Theory of Uneven Geographical Development". This essay is much more interesting and is basically a summary and example of the typical approach of Harvey in utilizing Marxist economical geography. This text can be considered an introduction to the subject, useful to look into before one would go on to read "Limits to Capital", Harvey's most important work of this kind.The last essay, "Space as a Key Word", is a philosophical analysis of the meaning of the word space, and its various dialectical aspects. This is in my view the most novel and contributive essay in the collection, as it builds on the work of Lefebvre, Einstein and Marx to construct a concept of space at nine different levels of abstraction. Clinical Trials have evolved over the past few decades in multiple dimensions. There are legal, regulatory, statistical, procedural, and clinical dimensions which tend to structure them in ways which were not prevalent to anyone who entered medicine decades earlier. The book by Hulley et al, Designing Clinical Research, is a wonderful overview of most of these dimensions. It brings the reader up to date with many of the key factors which have become part of Trials and give an excellent amount of depth so that the book stands on its own.The book is divided into three major sections; (i) Basics including sampling, trial hypotheses testing and statistical analyses as well and general trial types. (ii) Designs which examines the various types of trials from randomized case control, cross-sectional, and other such classic trial methodologies, (iii) Implementation, including the ethical issues and data management.The Basics provides a reasonable overview of the randomization, sizing, and the establishment of the statistical plan for a Trial. The approach is classic with the null hypothesis approach and the metrics necessary for properly sizing a successful Trial. The presentation is in a summary nature and the reader is either expected to be familiar with the development of the mathematics or just to use the Tabular approaches as presented. There are excellent discussions on various approaches such as continuous versus dichotomous and the material is useful even for those well experienced in the area.The Designing sections go over the details associated with various Trial approaches and discuss the implementation, and the advantages and disadvantages. Again, even for someone already familiar with the material the authors provide added insight well worth the reading. Again when discussing such elements as likelihood designs and Receiver Operating Characteristics the material is of a summary nature, adequate for both understanding and application but not of any material depth. Yet that was never the objective of the book.Finally in implementation the authors present an excellent discussion of the Ethical Issues that are frequently found in many Trials. There are other elements here as well but the Ethical discussions have become more prevalent to current day Trials.The challenge that this and other works on Trials will be facing are the Trial involving genome based approaches. For example in MDS and the use of demethylating therapeutics such as azacytidine and others one may ask the ethical question; if this is demethylating and methylation is both the cause while also being a control in other cells, how long should one wait to see long term effects? In cases such as the BRAF inhibitors in melanoma, what import is the extension of life if the costs are so great? Also how aggressively should one approach multiple drug therapies? Finally, as we see more genetically specific drugs on a patient by patient basis, can Trials like those discussed herein still be considered a gold standard and if not what then would take their place. Therapeutics targeted at a specific genome type will be difficult to analyze as we have with large Trials discussed in the book.Overall the book is a superb overview of Trials and is worth a read by finishing Med Students, Resident, and even those experienced in Trials. It is well written, logically laid out, considers almost all the key questions, and presents information adequate for most.

Great for MDs or PhDs wanting to refresh their knowledge on how to design the strongest research methodology they can. Clearly written book discussing different study designs and their pros and cause when trying to establish a causal association between an exposure and a disease event (or intervention and reduced disease event). This book focuses on clinical research, but is often used in public health courses that deal with general community research as well.The fact that it's used often as a textbook is reflected in its very high price point.

I read this book during my clinical research studies. I continue reading it after graduation. I always look forward to the re-introduction of the material. At the same time, I learn something new from the book. I would highly recommend it to clinical research students. It is an excellent required and recommended textbook.

I haven't read it yet, but a quick skim of a few chapters leads me to believe this book is exactly what I was looking for. I am new to clinical research and this book seems perfect for learning all the basics.I am just slightly disappointed that I spent ~$65 for a new copy, and it came with a bit of damage and fraying on one edge. I guess I'm being picky, but for the price I would have liked the book to be in mint condition. Feels as if I bought it used (although it was in plastic wrapping).

An excellent book. Clearly written, very concise. It guides you step by step in designing clinical research. It covers basic points usually underestimated in other books and some critical points as grant proposals.

I'm not married yet, but I'm getting there and am in a committed relationship with a man who has a little boy. I don't have kids myself and honestly at the beginning of the relationship was slightly terrified at the prospect of becoming a stepmother. However, this book has helped me proactively prepare (mentally and physically) in ways to interact and love on my to-be stepson. One thing I loved about this book was that it completely focused on how we are only adequate through God's grace and Jesus' forgiveness. It helped me get rid of the idea that I'm supposed to be some "perfect" step mom but instead that I can rest in God's grace and his guidance in my life. It was also realistic with expectations of what relationships may look like or play out to be - even if it was hard for me to read. No fairy tale expectations, but instead grace, love, hard work and the reward of knowing we can love on our stepchildren while serving the Lord who put us there for a purpose.

I've read several books on step-parenting, blending families, and similar topics, but this is the BEST book yet. There were so many times in my head I was yelling, "Yes! That is me! That is us!" This book provides validation that what I am experiencing is normal, workable, and sometimes comical. I love the way the authors are 'real' in their anecdotes, expectations, and range of emotions, all while reminding the reader how to navigate this uncharted territory with the love, grace, and mercy of Christ. This book is comforting, encouraging, and empowering; go ahead and order it!

As a stepmom myself for 20 years, I've read a lot of stepparenting books and understand the stepmom journey. The positive tone this book offers in regards to the stepmom role is valuable—unlike too many stepparenting books that paint a negative picture of blended families.A key point this book emphasizes is that our worth is not based on how others see us or treat us, or even on how good a job we’re doing as a stepmom—because we will fail!— but on how God sees us. It’s so easy to get hung up on our insecurities when our stepchildren disregard our efforts or we don’t live up to our expectations or those of our spouse and feel defeated in our role. But our success as stepmoms isn’t on the outcome of the stepmom-stepchild relationship but instead, whether we allow God to guide us in our role (our attitudes and behaviors) and allow His love and grace to flow through us to our stepchildren.There are a lot of other great tips on how to define your role, dealing with the ex, protecting your marriage, the importance of forgiveness and trust, and much more! I recommend this book to any stepmom, regardless of what stage of the journey you're in—you will find nuggets of gold to guide you!

I love this book!!! They are so real about how difficult it can be as a step-mom. The realization that I'm not alone has been a true comfort. It helped me evaluate my perception of what my role as a step-mom looks like and change my mindset that has been holding me hostage with self-condemnation for not being what I thought a step-mom should be. Whew! What a relief! A huge weight has been lifted! I recommend this book for ALL step-moms, whether you're new to it, or have been on this road for a while.

I bought this book because of the Christian perspective, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I found the chapter about dealing with the ex-wife super helpful - an area where I struggle most. As there are always challenges with step parenting, I am grateful for the shared experiences of the authors and their suggested Bible verses to keep in my heart focused as I’m growing with my new family.

This book helps keep me centered and focus on the real task. I read just a little bit each day to keep my mind on God and my husband and it helps keep my mouth in check.

I recommend this book to any stepmoms but especially those early on in the position. Being a step-parent is a difficult job and this book provides concrete steps and real-like examples to help along the way. I discovered this book very late in my step parenting role. The major of my situations would have been very different if I had this excellent advice at that time.

This book gave me peace and helped me realize it's ok to think and feel a certain way and that I'm totally normal!

Such a tragedy is hard to fathom. Karen Spears Zacharias has done a wonderful job of making Karly come alive for the reader.This book packs a powerful punch.We all need to watch and listen more to the children we come in contact with. Heed the signs of abuse the author has listed.I don't think for one second that the mother could have been so completely ignorant of what was happening. Shame on her.I pray that David finds happiness and some sort of healing.I also realize the toll of putting this in writing must have taken on the author. I am a woman of strong faith...a mother, a grandmother, and just recently, a great grandmother.This is a hard book to read but I take comfort in knowing that Karly will never be hurt again.God bless the child.

We'll done. I can not even begin to imagine what emotions hovered over you while putting this heart wrenching story to paper. I read and I cried, I read and I cried, I cried and cried and read. I worked in human services with adolescent teens who suffered with emotional and behavior disorders. Many of them suffered abuse in their own homes be it physical, sexual and mental, they were broken from within. Karen I view you not only as strong and courageous but as a woman with heart, BIG HEART. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for getting the truth of what happened to this little angel. "....Shawn Field tortured Karly because he is a sick bully." My sentiments exactly. But he did show the world just how powerful a 3 yr old girl can be, enough to put a grown male idiot in prison for a very very long time. His life is...over. As it should be.But...since Karly lived with both her mother and father, I blame them both too. That Sarah was neglectful is an understatement. Her negligence led directly to Karly's murder and she should be in prison (or a nuthouse). She should have given Karly to David for good, like she gave away her other baby daughter for good.I don't believe that David belongs in prison but for God's sake why couldn't he rise to the occasion just ONCE and be the man he needed to be to protect his daughter? I think he was way too worried about himself being deported. I just got the impression that David was a weak quiet man that could have lived quite nicely with Karly's being bruised and bald for the rest of her life. (Which as it turns out he did.) Edit: I felt guilty for being so hard on David. I know he loved Karly very much. Her dying from the abuse probably never crossed his mind as being a real possibility. I'm sorry that David has to live without Karly and with so much pain.My heart is broken for Karly and the 3 year life she endured for nothing. And I am livid that no one really cared enough to do anything actually helpful or to take this cruel abuse seriously. My only consolation is that yes, Karly is now with Jesus, just as she needed and wanted to be. God did stop her torture, her pain, her suffering, and all her fear. I know she is resting in peace with her maker now and I look forward to meeting her some day and knowing her forever.This is a very well-written book that I can only recommend if you have lots of kleenex nearby. And a good understanding of death and resurrection will help you keep ahold of your hope.

This was a well written, documented and thoroughly investigated book. It's so sad to me that a mother seeing clear signs of abuse does nothing. I agree that Sarah deserves some kind of punishment for her indirect knowledge/involvement of Karly's death. I downloaded this book today and didn't put it down until I was finished. It only takes one person. I heard your interview on True Murder, with Dan Zupansky. Thank you for writing this book and making people more aware. I'm sorry this happened to you, that you had to be involved in this story but I'm glad, in a weird way it was you. Thank you Karen.Jody SLC,UT

I struggle with how to rate this book.This is a true story of a beautiful little girl, who was failed by so many people.The monster that killed her was sentenced, however, in my opinion, there were many other monsters, her Mother, etc. Who knew what was going on and did nothing.I forced myself to finish this book. It gave me nightmares. Although so many people were not held accountable for their part, someday, they will have to face God, and hopefully then they will be held accountable.

Unbelievable that Sarah received no charges for the torture and murder of her beautiful child. She's as guilty as Shawn is.Karen Spears Zacharias is a remarkable writer and storyteller. I can not stop thinking about Karly. She is haunting my dream.

This was well written and researched. It is so very sad what this little girl suffered at the hands of such a monster. And how this mother did not help this little girl. How she turned a blind eye to the events leading up to the murder of this precious little girl. Now she moves on like it is a thing of the past . She also should have been charged with at the least... endangering the welfare of a child. But in order to get a conviction you have to make a deal to get the testimony of someone first hand to admit what they ignored. Such a sad order of events.
