I never put spoilers in my reviews. In my opinion, the best authors are storytellers...the sort that used to hold people spellbound in the days when owning books was reserved for the very rich or even before the written word. This is one such author.Ms. Hunter's world and character building is almost flawless; so much so that while reading this book you believe. I'm an avid reader (200-300 books a year) and finding books that are unique enough I can't predict, at least to some extent, is a wonderful thing. I found this author through reading C. E. Murphy's books, which I also thoroughly enjoyed, and now I'm hooked. This author's narrative is brilliant, painting wonderful word pictures without excess verbiage. Her characters, including the secondary and tertiary, are well drawn and distinct from each other.I think it must be more difficult to build a believable world that is a half step from our own than to create a whole new one. In a new world you create your own reality whereas, in a book such as this one, you have to slide it's realty into our everyday well enough that the reader isn't jarred from the fantasy. Faith Hunter does so seamlessly.Thank you Ms. Hunter for sharing your storytelling gift. I'm looking forward to reading all your storiesAll this and great proofreading and editing, too.I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. I prefer my urban fantasy to be filled with kickass female characters without making the main thrust of every chapter be about sex. The cover is my main complaint. As with so many novels, the person who wrote the book apparently had no say in the cover. Jane doesn't leave exposed skin and breasts pushed up so high that the vamps can just clamp down on a boob and suck her dry. She doesn't leave a long ponytail blowing in the wind for someone to grab. When will the person drawing the cover actually use a description of the character? If I'd seen this book in a store, I'd have walked right past it. Thankfully I saw it on Amazon where there were a lot of great reviews.Spoiler ------I like the way she got through the length of time this book takes place over without ever having sex. Oh sure, there's flirting and a bit more, and I bucked up and dealt with it, but no sex! Maybe one day I'll find a novel about a kickass female character who can get through whatever it is she's doing without sexual tension. Now that would be a dream come true!

I've been in the Jane Yellowrock world for a long time...from the beginning and have been obsessed with it since I first read Skinwalker years ago. I pre-order the next book into the series as soon as it is available and I own both paperbacks and kindle copies of all the books in the series. I also own kindle copies of all the shorts/short stories. If you enjoy being lost in a fully fleshed out world filled with paranormal people, you will love this book and the others that follow in the series. The additonal short stories help fill in gaps of things mentioned in passing and often answered questions that I didnt even realize that I had about Jane and the other characters in the books. Jane is a strong female character that I felt a kinship to and have become even more attached to knowing about her and her world the more I read and reread the stories created by the very talented Faith Hunter. Buy it, I do recommend the audio book as well as it does add some enhancement to the story. After many yrs I realized that I've been pronouncing so many things in this world (Jane Yellowrock's world) incorrectly. I plan to complete my collection with the audio books of the rest in the series. Beast Claws squad :) Pics show my well-loved, often reread copy and my kindle copy.

This is so far superior to the usual run of girl-vamp-slayer novels that it took me completely by surprise. The characters are believable, their motivations and interactions well-thought-out; the storyline was compelling and carried me right to the end (which I was sorry to reach -- thank goodness there's a next book in the series!)... Also, as someone who's lived and worked with both cougars and bobcats (at a rescue park), I appreciated HUGELY the author's actual KNOWLEDGE of how these cats behave, sound, and act. Thank you, Ms. Hunter, for having done the kind of homework most fantasy writers think they're above doing! The is the first vampire book I've read, which really even attempts to bring the genre into the 21st century. Once "out of the closet," OF COURSE they and their blood-slaves would have to deal with modern technology, legalities and law enforcement; and likewise, the government would have to sit up and take notice, and try to make laws (and profit?) from this startling new/old development. This author touches on those issues.I haven't enjoyed a series start this much, since the first "Dresden Files" book (see Jim Butcher's Chicago wizard series). Even the setting, New Orleans, was magical to me; it took me back to Anne Rice's "Interview With the Vampire" -- it was THAT convincing. I couldn't put it down. I'm about to move on to the second book -- hoping the story continues in this vein (you should forgive the expression), and at this elevated level.Later postscript: I've now read through to the recently released book 8, "Broken Soul." I sincerely recommend ALL of these books; the whole series. I'm only sorry that the author isn't able to write them as fast as I can read them.Thank you, Faith Hunter! I'm so glad to have "discovered" you.

Imagine, if you will, that, some day in the future, a descendent of one of those men who persecuted witches of Salem, Massachusetts, has created a computer that can think and reason at such a skill that it is a million times smarter than the smartest human being. What good, or what evil, might that bring forth? In some oblique way, this book strikes me as a not so far-fetched version of a sequel to Stephen King’s ‘The Stand.’ By that I do not mean to state that this features the same sort of characters or plot as my favorite work by the master of horror. Rather, this is a fantasy based upon facts, history and a conjecture about where humanity is headed due to the advances in artificial intelligence.Of course, the actual reality that will come will be wildly different from that imagined by this author, so it may be unwise to fear the future. But, this book takes such a penetrating look at our past that, were it not for the history we did preserve, there are precious few who could have seriously imagined that what our forefathers did do would ever have actually happened. I, for one, will never again look at witchcraft quite the same way I did before cracking open this superb novel.Further, I will never again make snide comments regarding faith healers or ‘good witches.’ It was not merely the novel that has opened my eyes, but it is the information provided by Rollins as an introduction, and as an explanation following the fictional story. Bravo! Now, on with my review…POV: Third person. But, if I dare say, the writer has the main character’s thoughts for us placed in italics, so, one could state that first person is sprinkled into the third person narrative, making for a more compelling and more dynamic novel.BLUSH FACTOR: To be sure, there are a few eff-words. Only six when I checked using the search option. I know a few will shy away from this novel, but, honestly, I don’t recommend that. The story content is just simply too compelling.WRITING & EDITING: Professional as would be expected with the higher list price for a Kindle Edition. I recommend also getting the Audible edition, as it is a first-rate production narrated by Christian Baskous brings all the greatest essence of the writing forward for us to contemplate. This Action-Adventure will dare you to reconsider humanity’s place. In fact, it will have you reconsidering a great deal more than that, but only if you actually read it or listen to the Audible Edition.CLIFFHANGER ENDING: No, but he seems to have left the door open for a sequel. PLEASE, bring us another novel with this premise.Excerpt:‘…Bearing silent witness from the computer lab, Mara had heard the alarming words of the man who led the attack: Xénese must never be. It is an abomination, born of sorcery and filth.Breathing hard, she stared over to the second black case on the floor. It lay open, its inner padding cradling a sphere that Carly jokingly called the soccer ball. It was not a bad analogy. The device was indeed the size of a regulation ball. Similarly, hexagonal plates covered its surface. But rather than made up of stitched leather, the device consisted of alternating hexagonal plates of titanium and diamond-hard sapphire crystal. In a moment of hubris, she had named the device Xénese, the Galician word for Genesis.Still, the name fit, considering her goal.To bring forth life from the cold vacuum of nothingness. Was it any wonder such an ambition attracted the wrong attention? She again pictured the attackers’ robes and blindfolds, heard their justification for murder, ripped from the Bible: Suffer not a witch to live.Anger steadied her hand. Charlotte and the others died because of Mara’s work, but she would not let their deaths be in vain. Determination spread through her. Up until now, she had been running scared, overwhelmed by grief. But she was done running. Only now did she feel secure enough to check on the status of her work. Still, a final worry remained. In her panicked haste to extract Xénese and its hard drives from the university’s Milipeia Cluster, she worried she may have irreparably damaged the program.Please. It’s Christmas morning. Grant me this one gift.Over the next hour, she daisy-chained the drives encoded with her program modules into her laptop. She checked each one and sighed with relief when everything seemed intact. Next, she powered up what Carly called “the soccer ball.” As electricity flowed through a conditioner into the device, its tiny sapphire windows brightened with an azure glow, marking the successful ignition of the tiny lasers inside.“Let there be light,” she whispered with a sad smile, remembering how often Dr. Carson had used that line from the Book of Genesis—and her mentor’s warning the day before their test run.Rollins, James. Crucible (Sigma Force Novels) . William Morrow. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEThe author, in an afterword, claims there is more truth than fiction in this book. What is scary, for me, is that he may be correct. Although I do frequently read this author’s works, I’ve never really placed him so highly on my list of favorite writers. Until now. This is THAT enjoyable and stimulating. I only wish Rollins had kept this story going on for another thousand pages. No worry, I do expect a sequel…Five stars out of five. Well, actually 4-1/2, as it is too short.

For once, I can agree with the blurb for this novel. Normally the blurb does not describe the text accurately for me. This was spot on and it is a heart pounding novel of intense action, a historical mystery dating back to the Spanish Inquisition and science concerning Artificial Intelligence. The medieval text 'The Hammer of Witches' (1487) is delineated in depth and the reader is introduced to the world of witchcraft. For me, my knowledge was negligible until I read these portions. The action throughout is intense and does not stop from the beginning until the end. My advice is to buckle up your seat belt and hang on for the ride....The Artificial Intelligence portion of the novel is indeed mind boggling. I fear that we are almost there. I had never heard of the AI Eurisko previously nor his inventor Lenat. This was ten years ago and I can only imagine how far this science has advanced in a decade.Sigma Force certainly had a mystery on their hands and Commander Grey Pierce rises to the occasion with the team. Loved Mara and her contributions to the science portion. Wow, just wow.....The entire novel is incredible and the plot is well defined. In addition, the characters were fleshed out well My goodness, what a ride for me on a bitterly cold day in Vermont.Just superlative writing and am looking forward to others written by this author. Most highly recommended.

I’ve been reading Rollins for years. This book, however, knocked everything he’s ever published right out of the park. Imagine if artificial intelligence was so sophisticated it could literally learn what we do in a lifetime in just seconds. And what if that AI was put in the wrong hands? In this case, it’s a group that descends from a secret society of witch hunters who use Malleus Maleficarum (the Hammer of Witches) as their Bible. FYI: It’s a real book. To them AI is the new witchcraft. It starts out with quite the bang as Monk and Gray’s world is ripped out from under them in a very personal way. Then a genius girl who developed a powerful AI is targeted after a massacre takes place. I don’t want to get into too many details, here. But I do not normally go for artificial intelligence type stuff. I slept through I-Robot and had no interest in other movies of the same genre. This, though, gripped me from beginning to end. Never did I expect to be cheering on a digital intelligence. But I was. Just a terrific book.

I automatically order every Rollins novel to be delivered to my Kindle upon publication. One more of this caliber and I will require a sample first. While the premise was intriguing, the excess repetition rapidly became boring and the conclusion obvious. I understand the convention he was using in the development of Eve's intelligence, but a couple of examples would have sufficed.Oh well, an occasional disappointment is inevitable. This is the first of his novels not to rate five stars from me so he is still on auto delivery for now.

4 * (Rounded up from 3.5)I've read all of Rollins' books and enjoy the characters of his Sigma Force novels. But this one didn't live up to my expectations.I always appreciate the science that Rollins brings to his work, but (in my opinion) it overwhelms the realism of his storyline in Crucible. (I realize that the book is about AI—artificial intelligence—gone awry, but this is FICTION, so I want a STORY.) The chapters in which he relates Eve's thinking (Eve is the AI persona) distracted me from the characters that attract me to his books in the first place. It's almost as if Rollins is using these AI chapters as a glue to bind the rocking thriller scenes instead of trying to develop the story. It's not that Crucible is a BAD Sigma Force novel, but it disappointed me. I'll read the next installment in this series, hoping that it's full of more humanity, and less scientific razzle-dazzle.

The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies, by Michael V. Hayden

Review

“For a longtime spook, Hayden is a breezy and direct writer. He reduces complex issues of cyber and information warfare to essentials, and his polemic is leavened with humor and sympathy. He is at his best, though, when he shifts to a purely analytical tone. He coolly forecasts the direction of America under Trump, explains the intelligence that foreign governments are likely to collect from the president’s Twitter feed and describes the benefits Russia drew from the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Kremlin-connected Russian attorneys and senior Trump campaign officials.” — The New York Times “The more important, absorbing and disturbing aspect of Hayden’s book is the analysis from his professional perspective of what Trump and Trumpism mean for the intelligence community. It is sober, nuanced and, quite frankly, scary as hell.” - Mark Galeotti, Washington Post

The Assault on Intelligence is not just another polemic about a truth free President with a lack of intelligence as to information and cognitive skill. The reason is that it can be read in conjunction with his earlier book Playing on the Edge. Playing was written prior to this presidency and so contains analysis that can not be said to be shaded by the inadequacies of the present incumbent in the White House. These books should be read together. The discussions with President Bush regarding detentions, renditions and interrogations and the briefings to President Obama regarding covert programs in Playing on the Edge show presidents intent on learning the minutia of these actions. Though the author was not in office during the present administration it is clear from his background that he knows how Trump is perceived by the intelligence agencies and why. The classic example he refers to is the visit of the President to the CIA when he talked about how he caught the media in a lie regarding the size of his inaugural crowd. This to a group of people who stake their reputations on checking and rechecking facts which is detailed in Playing on the Edge.During the campaign the incumbent turned the intelligence briefers into political props and campaign tools and alleged that he could tell what they were thinking from body language which it is apparent from Playing would never happen.Interesting, in Assault it is made clear that the intelligence institutions took down Mike Flynn, not the Obama administration. From Playing, it is clear why. From the two books it is apparent that Michael Hayden contributes a cohesive understanding of the full picture of the damage the present administration has done to the professionals in the intelligence community. These books make it clear that agree or not with what covert action has been carried out in the past the average intelligence analyst has reason to wonder whether there is a thinking rational being at the other end of his work product. As a politically liberal reader, these texts make it possible to understand the threat to real facts communicated to the incumbent President in what he might do with them. Marge Haskell Instructor, Political Science Berkeley City College

General Hayden writes very well. There are many informed people writing books about the state of the U.S.; but of those I've read none other is laid out in a chronology, vocabulary and style that will make sense to the general public. Hayden's "Assault on Intelligence" moves as only first class prose can.The warning he sounds isn't the first we've heard since Donald Trump took office; but maybe this one is so clear, so fact-based and so chillingly frightening that Americans of all stripes will begin paying attention. If we do not trust and respect our institutions; we have no government.

General Hayden has, with great clarity, laid out the facts and conclusions of the most dangerous threat to our republic. Never in my lifetime did I expect to see an attack on our most important institutions of justice and intelligence. What is most frightening is the blind eye some in Congress have turned to any corruption and crimes that this administration have committed. This is an excellent book and I thank General Hayden for submitting this work to the ordinary American and to the future citizens of the United States who will seek to understand this dark chapter in our country's political system.

An eye opening insider's view of the death of truth and analytical fact based thinking in America in general and the Trump White house in particular. The extent to which Russian exploit of social media impacted the 2016 election is frightening and incontrovertible. The only think more scary is the willful ignorance of the President and those duped by their own shallow ignorance. The world is a complex place where we need the expertise if the best and the brightest. Hayden shines as one of America's brightest most genuinely patriotic citizens. Unlike our current commander in chief who treats truth and facts as inconvenient irritants. Highly recommended.

Incredibly well written, lots of different references to history, culture. Honest.

General Hayden (USAF, Ret.) was an officer of moderation and discipline when he was serving so this book will surprise those who knew him then. He is unsparing in his criticism of President Trump and the Trump Administration. Hayden has concluded that the President and his team have no concept of evidence based decision making or the difference between truth and falsehood. Hayden of course marshals a good deal of facts to support these conclusions. He was particularly incensed when the President on several occasions referred to the members of the Intelligence Community (IC) as "Nazis" without even thinking about the term. Hayden also is angry at the President's obvious distrust and disinterest in national intelligence reports and findings. Well the supporters of President Trump will undoubtedly ignore this book as an pathetic attempt by the "Deep State" to undermine his presidency while his detractors will consider the book as additional evidence of the President's unfitness for the job.
