"An admirable contribution... Schneider and Krug do a superb job of explaining basic existential theory for the reader unfamiliar with modern-day existential thought." --PsycCRITIQUES®I wish I could have read this book 50 years ago when I began practicing existential humanistic psychotherapy, building on valuable prior training in psychodynamic theory and practice. And I wish Rollo May, Jim Bugental, and others had lived to see their work so well explicated and extended to help people deepen their meaningful engagement in life. Schneider and Krug have gifted us with a book that enriches this profound movement to make psychotherapy good for the soul. --Thomas Greening, PhD, International Editor, Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Los Angeles, CAThis is a very good book, presented as an introduction to existential humanistic therapy. If you are conceptualizing cases or a student that is interested in learning the basics of humanistic-existential psychotherapy (and what it looks like in practice on a practical level) then this short book (180ish pages) is a great place to start. Kirk Schneider frequently cites other existential authors like Yalom, May and Elkins and does an excellent job of bringing it all together.

A good read and very insightful regarding the existential-humanistic approach to counseling. Many components will work well in my professional career.

Don't be mislead by the brevity of this little book. It has a depth of insight that brings traditional Existential-Humanistic theory into the contemporary dialogue. Combining theory and vignettes, this book makes a good introduction to the approach as well as a potent refresher of main themes.

Very one-dimensional take of integration of two major fields of therapy. Make sure you read the description thoroughly and decide if this matches up with your orientation. While I am both humanistic and existential in my practice, this book was worlds away from my views.

I bought this book because I'm getting a masters in clinical psych and I love it. Anyone studying to become a counselor or even just interested in this field should read this as well as other therapies. Very helpful and interesting.

It is a short version of whatever big version is. It is a good review book, if you need to get main points of theories, which we get grilled on, because in my program we have no classes on separate theories. I will get another book from this series. Nicely written, easy to read. I love the price on this series.

It is a great handy book for any Existential or humanistic therapist. It has brief history and implementation of the theory in psychotherapy. great read for graduate students in psychology

The topic is great. Its gives you an understanding of the approach but its just not an easy read. I had to reread many paragraphs to understand what they were trying to say.

John Burroughs Medal WinnerKirkus Reviews "Best Book of the Year" selectionScientific American "Recommended Book" selectionThree-time San Francisco Chronicle "Top Shelf" selectionBookish "Must-Read Book" & "Hottest Release" selectionPhi Beta Kappa Society "Reading List" selection"A richly literary account. . . . Anchored by deep reflection and scientific knowledge, A Wilder Time is a portrait of an ancient, nearly untrammeled world that holds the secrets of our planet's deepest past, even as it accelerates into our rapidly changing future. The book bears the literary, scientific, philosophic, and poetic qualities of a nature-writing classic, the rarest mixture of beauty and scholarship, told with the deftest touch." ― John Burroughs Medal judges’ citation"The dramatic, austere west coast of Greenland is the setting of A Wilder Time. . . . The geological pursuits [are] punctuated by a thrilling encounter with a peregrine falcon; the terribly painful regimen of bathing in an icy-cold stream (the discomfort exacerbated by a breeze strong enough to keep away the dense clouds of mosquitos); sampling lichen, which Glassley found reminiscent of 'a simple white sauce and semolina pasta'; and a telling of his irregular path to science. . . . This engaging book's more rigorously science-oriented epilogue, including some earth-shattering detail on [a] singed-hair rock that Glassley found, is a treat for geology buffs." ―Pasatiempo"Glassley ponders the nature of perception and the human mind, describes the dramatic physical features of Greenland's makeup and recounts the thrilling adventures of his extended visits there." ―Scientific American"Transport[s] readers across the world and deep into the past, while suggesting a way forward into the future. For budding naturalists, armchair geologists, and anyone who loves a good expedition, this is an ideal read." ―Bookish"Amazing. A Wilder Time is a book for those who love nature and have that longing desire to learn the unknown, all hidden along the walls of the fjords of Greenland." ―North of Oxford"Glassley eloquently evokes a place where land feathers into Arctic sea, ice floes glide by on mirror-smooth tongues of clear, frigid water and silence reigns. . . . This story offers perspectives on deep time to boggle minds. . . . Glassley's vivid impressions of East Greenland attempt what few scientist-writers try: to explore beyond the comfort zone of his field." ―Nature"Mesmerizing. . . . [Glassley] is a thoroughly accessible guide whose wonder at the landscape that surrounds him is infectious." ―Washington Independent Review of Books"Writing with the same poetic precision, artistry, and soulful receptivity as Gretel Ehrlich and Barry Lopez, with the added impact of his rigorous scientist-in-the-field expertise, Glassley is spellbinding as he chronicles his exhilarating adventures." ―Booklist (starred review)"Profound and moving. . . . A superb tool for a better understanding of the natural world and why real science matters." ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Poetic, enthusiastic. . . . Combining the strengths of travel writing and lyrical memoir, Glassley translates his own 'incandescent experience of place' into a conservation message: 'We must share and celebrate the wild so that it might be saved.'" ―Foreword Reviews (starred review)"Thoughtful. . . . Evincing humility in the midst of the great 'unshaped wild,' Glassley exudes a palpable and infectious sense of wonder." ―Publishers Weekly"A poetic, metaphysical and philosophical treatise on the wildness of life on earth. . . . [Glassley's] enthusiasm for geology is palpable. His love of the wild is tangible, and his way with words beautiful." ―Shelf Awareness for Readers"A Wilder Time is nature writing at its informative and inspirational best and unreservedly recommended." ―Midwest Book Review"While conveying the geological hypotheses, techniques of data collection, and adventures of his expeditions to Greenland with his two Danish colleagues, William E. Glassley also brings startling sensory precision to his descriptions. The velvety feeling of moss, the taste of lichen, the alternating rhythms of terror and fluidity in schools of fish through which a predatory sculpin cruises―such experiences bring what might have seemed a stark world of rock and ice alive. This delicacy of perception is the vehicle through which not only the scientific quest but also the profound mystery of our living Earth saturates this memorable book." ―John Elder, coeditor of The Norton Book of Nature Writing and author of Picking Up the Flute"Glassley exhibits an uncanny ability to put us in the midst of Greenland's vast silence, where he takes us deep into the planet's soul. It is an important and well-told adventure that opens us to life's grand expanse and begs us to follow in spite of the brevity of our existence." ―John Francis, author of Planetwalker and The Ragged Edge of Silence"A Wilder Time is a wonderful mix of science and poetry. It delves into the kind of spiritual effect that wilderness has on those privileged to work in it and how it changes the way we experience and understand our surroundings and our lives. The science, including the geological controversy at the heart of the book, is lucidly explained, and readers will be absorbed by the story Glassley tells as well as his many vividly described encounters with nature. Next time someone asks me why I am a geologist, I will just hand them this book." ―William L. Griffin, professor of geology at Macquarie University"While conducting research probing deep time and the origin of continents, Glassley discovered a further source of fascination: the Arctic wilderness of Greenland. In A Wilder Time, he shares his encounters with unvarnished nature still free―for now―from the corruptions and constructs of human settlement. With openness, clarity, and a keen eye for detail, he weaves adventure, research, astonished awe, and thoughtful reflection into an absorbing account of his sojourns." ―Martha Hickman Hild, author of Geology of Newfoundland: Field Guide"Very few people have spent as much time as Glassley in such deep wilderness. So it would behoove us to pay attention even if he had not brought back such a fascinating, lovely, and useful set of observations. This is a remarkable book." ―Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Oil and Honey"In this extraordinary narrative, Glassley, a geologist, describes his intimate relationship with Greenland's ancient rocks in such a fashion that the reader who knows nothing about geology is hooked; that reader feels like he’s not only been transported to the rockribbed coast of West Greenland, but is also bent down and studying its rocks right along with Glassley. At the same time, the book reminds us of the degree to which climate change is damaging the planet. . . . Urgently recommended!" ―Lawrence Millman, author of Last Places and At the End of the World"As geologists, we may be rational scientists, but expeditions to remote places touch something deep in us that moves us to also be poets. Glassley has turned his experiences in Greenland into searingly beautiful descriptions of a wild landscape and the ways in which that landscape moves and changes him. Every sentence is evocative, connoting curiosity, awe, and respect in equal measure. A Wilder Time is a paean on the importance of wilderness to the human spirit and a saddening reminder of what we lose when we divorce ourselves from contact with wild places. Glassley's voice will stay with me the way the works of Loren Eiseley, Edward Abbey, Rachel Carson, and Aldo Leopold have stayed with me over the decades." ―Jane Selverstone, professor emerita in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico

This review is by Robert M Rice's wife. For some reason a review of A Wilder Place piqued my interest, and I ordered the book and read it. I have been married to my geologist husband for almost 40 years, and we are finally having fun talking about geology. He is so happy. And so am I. This book sparked that interest in me because I really wanted to understand it. It's not an easy book and assumes a bit more knowledge of geology than I think is common. but it's worth the effort. Sure makes you want to go visit Greenland, too. So thanks Bill Glassley for opening up a whole new earth to me. My husband handed me one of his favorite books Hard Road West: History and Geology along the Gold Rush Trail which I also avidly read and recommend to anyone who wants a better understanding of the forces that raised (and dug out) all those obstacles that harried the tough and often tender people who thought it was a good idea to get in a wagon and go look for treasure in California. That book also helped me to better understand the tectonic significance of Mr. Glassley's (and his colleagues') discoveries in the isolated magnificence of Greenland.

Firstly, the book is far shorter than the 222 numbered pages. The Table of Contents is on page 11; Chapter 1 begins on page 27. More than 20+ additional pages could easily be deleted by removing all the blanks. The maps are full page and extremely helpful. Secondly, the book is a typical nature experience but in a very atypical location. The author brings the reader to bare cliffs and barren ground. We become immersed within the quiet and timelessness of the visit. We measure lichen growth rate, experience unusual sound acoustics and rapidly changing weather. Too bad the author did not take advantage and provide more of his personal experiences. Lastly, so much more geology could be included. The reader visits varying locations which become a moment for reflection rather than a teachable moment. The author provides a perfect example about his own epiphany when listening to a college professor provide a condensed story of a rock outcrop during an undergraduate field trip. The book is well written and provides a glimpse into a space above the Arctic Circle. So much could have been added to, at least, provide the intended 222 pages. I rate the work as a 4 only because of the intimate look at coastal Greenland. Otherwise, I belief the book is a 3.

Glassley gives an entertaining, in places even lyrical, account of geological fieldwork in West Greenland. He accompanied two Danish colleagues on their quest to "salvage their reputations as field geologists". Their earlier fieldwork in the area had been severely criticized by another field team, which had published their findings and (re-)interpretations in a lengthy paper. Glassley takes pains to avoid giving a reference to the paper or naming the authors (I wonder why - a quick literature search provides all the details). Glassley recounts how the studies "second time around" fully bear out the earlier work and indeed lead to an enhanced geological history of the area, all in terms readily understood by the lay reader.

Solid very mesmerizing science, careful simple and elegant prose. This author has the gift of language that enables him to put beauty before us so well that we can see it through his experiences, without allowing himself to drift astray into distracting excess. It seems to be a long (although not long enough) haiku.... he has given us a gift. This will surely influence budding scientists/poets for years.

I'm a geologist and very interested in climate change and its effects on our world. This book gives a scientific and yet personal view of that changing world that I found very engaging.

I am glad I got this book. I wish it included pictures of some of the major rock formations.

Written by a geologist with the soul of a poet.

Beautifully written, a poetic view of Greenland, that I felt through the auther’s heart and soul. It challenged me to take a deeper look at where I am in my view of the land in which I live in. What is my contribution to Mother Earth? A must read for all, and to be read now.

This is a great primer if you're interested in various lectures however in that it isna sampling from lectures taken from collections of larger subjects, it provides no accompanying downloads and you become aware you're missing background as each lecturer refers to ideas "previously discusses".This is a sampler and for that $30 is too much to pay. The idea is that you will hopefully purchase the full program(s). It's either valuable or it isn't. If it were, you would sell more by expanding the sampler to people willing to separate with say$10.
