As a life-long gardener who has taken many classes including ones at Longwood Gardens and Mt. Cuba Center for Horticulture I found this book to be a wonderful addition to my library. It is clearly a labor of love and I learned a lot of things about these wonderful plants that is not often or ever taught in classes. Stunning photos that capture the details touched upon during the authors writing.

Carol Gracie's book is a joy to read, each chapter telling the engrossing story of a flower (or two) and its related species, an ideal botanical book. She covers everything from the latest science to cultural history to personal observations. The thoroughness of her research is rare and has given us a book that we have only dreamed of. Highlights covered include pollination, growth patterns, name derivations, the science behind name changes, medicinal and other uses, interconnections with other plant and animal species, historical associations, horticultural uses, and much more. She has brilliantly illustrated the significant characteristics with gorgeous photographs, the close-ups especially stunning, revealing the beauty and remarkable inner structure of flowers.I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in flowers and the natural world. Even the flowers one might not be familiar with are fascinating for Gracie's wonderful stories, information, and insights into the plant world.

This is a lovely book for beginners and those who have greater gardening knowledge

Excellent addition to anyone's field guide library. It's comprehensive, with well-researched text and beautiful photos throughout.

Carol Gracie's latest book, Spring Wildflowers of the Northeast: A Natural History, is a unique book in many ways. The more than 500 photographs are stunning and incredibly detailed, the hundreds of references bear witness to the exhaustive research that has gone into this book, and the extensive glossary explaining every botanical term, provides a valuable guide to novices and amateur botanists. The book is written in an accessible prose, without "dumbing down" the topics, and it's thoroughly entertaining due to all the amusing anecdotes about the history and lore of every single plant.I'll recommend this book to everyone interested in the natural history of plants. Read it, and then take a walk in the spring woods. You'll have a completely different perspective on the lovely wildflowers you meet along the way.

Fantastic info!

Carol Gracie has published a unique book for wildflower enthusiasts. There are many field guides, but they give you only the barest of information, on each specimen, as they are designed for carrying with you when you go looking for these treasures. This book is a different kind of treasure: a leisurely exploration of each flower...there are 9 pages alone on the Spring trout lily! No other wildflower book does this! Fellow botanists, serious collectors, or ocassional readers will love this book for it's gorgeous photographs, details about the plants actual life cycle, and stories about their names and histories.

Informative with beautiful illustrations.

This is a historic document, not a best-selling novel.

Great product with fast shipping!

Very interesting book and just the one for my history library. Thanks, it was in very good shape.

The Squatter in the Don is interesting. The plot centers on two families in California in the late nineteenth century. Following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Land Act of 1851, pioneers from the east have been legally empowered to squat on the land of Hispanic families who have been settled in the area for hundreds of years. Although the laws officially would designate the land as belonging to the original owners, legal disputes surrounding the deeds, corrupt local judges who favored white settlers, the policy of allowing the squatters who remain on the land during the many years while the status of claims were in litigation, and state laws allowing the white farmers to shoot any of the Hispanic family's cattle who wandered onto their unfenced farms all combined to create a desperate and unjust situation for the Hispanic inhabitants of California. It's amidst this turmoil that the events of The Squatter and the Don take place. A family of settlers, the Darnells, squats on the Alamar's ranch. The Alamars are a wealthy and cultured family who have run the large cattling ranch for many decades, but their deed is still questioned by the U.S. government. The Darnells have a grown son, Clarence, who disagrees with his father's methods of claiming land and the government's treatment of those in the Alamar's situation. Clarence immediately develops a relationship with the Alamars, and he becomes betrothed to one of the family's daughters, Mercedes. It's a classic, recognizable romance story pattern, with a good deal of politics thrown in.While the story itself has some nice moments, the novel is certainly no masterpiece. De Burton's chief goal in the novel is explicitly political. She is concerned both with the land and legal issues that developed and affected her family following the Mexican-American War and also with the railroad monopoly in California and the corruption and irrationality of the state and federal legislatures concerning all of these issues. The novel has long, and very long, chapters detailing legal minutiae relevant to these matters, and several other long chapters are comprised of characters making impassioned, philosophical speeches on these subjects that concerned De Burton. I certainly don't mind good political novels, and this aspect of the novel can be interesting and would be of special interest to scholars. But the novel couldn't be much more didactic, and it becomes, as a result, pedantic at times. De Burton has made huge aesthetic sacrifices in handling politics the way that she does in the novel. Especially at the end of the book, I found myself shocked whenever the characters all suddenly appeared again. I'd been reading about the railroad for so long that the novel's central plot and characters had all faded far into the background. So, this is the sort of book that should be of interest to scholars, to people trying to get a complete picture of the development of the Chicano/a novel. This is not a novel to pick up if you simply want a good read.

Ruiz de Burton's Novel Squatter and the Don provides an picture for the audience of what 19th Century after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was like. I enjoyed this novel in its relation of historical issues to fictional characters. The development of the story gave voice to "native" Californios or Mexicans who had settled in California before manifest destiny. The discussion of Anglo Americans and their journey to settle into lands of the west for cheaper prices shed light on injustices within this expansionism. Ruiz de Burton provides a clear definition of squatters and settlers, and their relationship with the west. The introduction for this story also gives clarification to the issues prominent in the story and highlights important facts to pay attention to while reading. Even though this story does not discuss lower-class Latinos or Native Americans and what their story or part within the settlements of the west is, the novel plays an important role in the picture for the upper class. It is unfortunate that for most Latinos, money and class are not easily obtainable in order to resolve problems. Ruiz de Burton uses the marriage of Mercedes and Clarence as a resolution in this novel, with Clarence's return shown as that of a white knight coming to the rescue. Throughout the novel, Clarence provides a voice of reason for both backgrounds in order to branch across stereotypes and prejudices. However, without a person like Clarence a resolution may not have been possible. This novel was an enjoyable read, without real gore or poignant tension such as a novel like Joaquin Murrieta that provides a very different story for this same time period. Overall, the story had interesting themes, writing style and history which made for a pleasant read and conclusion at the end.

There are surprises in The Squatter and the Don which people in San Diego will miss as no one alive will be able to make the connections between the people Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton satirizes in her novel and their living counterparts. Events in the novel center around the demise of a project to connect San Diego to the East Coast by means of the Texas Pacific Railroad. Equal in importance was the usurpation by squatters with the help of the California state legislature and the judiciary of land that did not belong to them. The Squatter and the Don is steeped in indignation. The love story is subsidiary to the recital of abuses. It is the glue that keeps the reader interested in seeing how the skullduggery plays out. Supporting players are bad because of circumstances, weakness, and lack of moral principles. The Squatter and the Don can be seen as a Mexican-American parallel to Ramona , a novel that pillories Anglo-American mistreatment of California Indians.. The author claims her Mexican-American characters have much in common with their Anglo neighbors. They are ambitious, educated, hard working, and aware of new modes of thought . . . Ralph Waldo Emerson, Herbert Spencer and Thomas Carlyle..As the novel heads toward its conclusion, the author links the plight of Mexican-American rancheros to that of San Diego citizens. Both are affected by the chicanery of despoilers who profit from their misery. If one can get by some of the romantic syrup and the trite ending, The Squatter and the Don is a novel that touches on human and political corruption and anticipates the bold work of Upton Sinclair, Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser.
