A friend gave this to me right as I was about to make a big move across the country, leaving behind a place where I was known, loved, and appreciated and beginning again where I was utterly anonymous. I approached this book expecting to find some wonky theology and gimmicky suggestions; I was floored by the deep truths and valuable biblical parallels. I had never approached Jesus' time in the wilderness from this angle; it was insightful and didn't endeavor to read more into the Scripture than necessary for the sake of novelty. I really appreciated how Chole emphasized that we are never guaranteed that we'll emerge from a hidden season into one of acclaim, and that should not be our goal. Jesus is working in us just as much when we are unknown by the world and recognition may never be in store for some of us, outside of being recognized by God (nothing is more meaningful than that!). I expected the author to make some sort of promise that God has me in an anonymous place now so that He can propel me into the limelight at a later time, so make the most of this. She never does so. Make the most of this, we are told. But if you never know fame this time is no less significant.I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone entering into, or struggling in, a hidden season of their own, whether that season is to be short-lived or has lasted their entire life.

Beyond any expectations that I had.....the writing is excellent! This book opened new thoughts and brought me to an even deeper love and adoration of Jesus. I have given it away as gift once and now ordered again to gift another friend. Also, I am reading it now for a second time, studying referenced scriptures more, and praying more as I read. Thank you Alicia Britt Chole!!!!! You opened up 30 years of Jesus' life for me to admire, learn from, and apply new understandings to my heart and mind. Amazing read!! Not sure how she does it, but this reads smooth as butter and yet the truths revealed within cut like a sharp knife and carve His Word deeper into my heart and mind. Again, I thank you Alicia Britt Chole!.

This book muses on the quiet times (or at least not revealed to us) in Jesus’ life and what cines out of those. She focuses on His adult years from 13-30, His 40 days in the Judean wilderness, and other brief hidden days of His ministry. Her primary point is that what Jesus said and did in public had first been learned in private through intimacy with His Father. She asks in a variety of ways, "What are we learning from our anonymous seasons?"What grows in anonymous seasons? ... An unshakable identity, a trust in God’s timing, and an eternal perspective. Here are three poignant quotes to give you a taste...“Abundance may make us feel more productive, but perhaps emptiness has greater power to strengthen our soul.” p. 3In reference to Jesus’ baptism and revelation that the Messiah had come, she says, “What the people did not know was that their long-awaited Messiah had also been waiting!” p. 30“‘I want to be like Jesus,’ we say with sincerity. ‘I want to walk like Jesus walked.’ Then may our loving Father God help us begin submitting like Jesus submitted.” p 151

I love this book! It was so perfect for me that I felt like it was written just for me! Being in an anonymous season in my life at this time (a very long time) my life now makes sense. What I once felt like was a curse at times now, without a doubt, is surely a blessing and an honor. I count it all good and the Lord has my full attention. This as been a tremendous boost for my prayer life as well. I've gone from "woe is me" to "teach me and show me Your way". For those feeling as though you've been forgotten, left by the wayside or you've recently moved or had a major life change and are having a hard time getting your groove back -- I highly recommend this book. [Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8]

These are hidden years in my life. I have been struggling to endure them, but after reading this lovely book , I can find peaceful and useful purpose in this blessed respite. Thank you, Alicia Britt Chole, for sharing this insight and helping release me from the confusion this formerly unwelcome period had caused.

Very easy read with many thought-provoking ideas about the hidden years of Jesus. The author has a keen sense of ability to think outside and the box of concrete facts about what we do know about the life of Jesus while He was here on earth. The way she then braided His anonymous hidden years into our life was well done. I was challenged and often paused for my hidden years. I became alarmingly aware how even the Christian world has shaped my thoughts for not being anonymous and the opportunities to continue filling my life with activities, appointments and achievements to feel like I’m following God’s call. We all need to read this book with an open heart and mind to embrace where we have been • where we are going • why we’re headed there • what our ambitions are and finally and most importantly, if any of it or all of it as God would have it for us.

This book is a much needed reminder in our generation that not a moment of our life is wasted....God is intentionally forming and shaping us, mostly in the behind-the-scenes moments in life. We all are in such a hurry, looking for immediate results. Though we may desire to have a platform or rush into a "predominant" ministry or calling, we will only contribute to the kingdom as we trust God to prepare us for the work He will assign in His perfect timing. A perfect book for keeping me humble, patient, and thankful for all God has done in the hidden years of my life...beautifully illustrated by Alicia Britt Chole through a journey of the precious hidden year of Jesus, as well as her own life.

I really needed this book. Anonymous helped me regain my perspective about where I am in life and how to be fully content right here, right now. The author is masterful in writing with eloquence while honoring great practicality. I don’t remember the last time I read a book and literally loved every chapter. This is one of those rare ones. Tomorrow, I will begin rereading it from page one.

Amazon.com Review

Good grief! The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 launches the most ambitious and most important project in the comics and cartooning genre: over a period of 12 years, Fantagraphics Books will release every daily and Sunday strip of Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts," the best-known and best-loved series in the world. Most everyone with an interest in its history has seen the very first strip ("Good ol' Charlie Brown... How I hate him!"), but this first volume follows it up with 287 pages (three daily strips or one Sunday per page) of vintage material in chronological order. "Peanuts" was unique at the time for portraying kids who seemed like real kids, but they also had a wisdom beyond their years, embodied especially by the lovable loser, Charlie Brown, who even in these early years has lost 4000 checker games in a row. We see him don his familiar jagged-stripe shirt for the first time (December 1950) and, at the age of 4, at his peak as a babe magnet. Shermy is the other significant boy, and the girls in their lives are Patty (not to be confused with Peppermint Patty) and Violet. Schroeder is an infant who has learned to sit up in order to play Beethoven on his toy piano. Snoopy is an anthropomorphic dog who plays baseball (April 1952) and has his own thoughts (October 1952). In March 1952 we meet a bug-eyed Lucy, who by November has been designated "Miss Fuss-Budget of 1952" and is pulling the football away from Charlie Brown (Violet had done it a year earlier). Her baby brother Linus arrives in July 1952. The book itself is beautifully packaged, the strips printed large and clear on high-quality paper and accompanied by an in-depth essay by David Michaelis, a 1987 interview with Schulz, an introduction by Garrison Keillor, and even an index of characters and subjects. It's so well-done that any reader will be impatient for the rest of the series, but in the meantime this is a book to savor. --David Horiuchi

From Publishers Weekly

With its ambitious plan to reprint all of "Peanuts" in chronological order over the next 12 years, Fantagraphics is making this comics masterpiece available for everyone. The real surprise of this first volume is watching the beloved comic strip develop from its embryonic stage. From the start, Schulz had some of the ground rules in place: the ensemble cast whose faces appeared only in profile or three-quarter views, the sophisticated language from the mouths of babes and the absence of visible adults from their world. But, although "good ol' Charlie Brown" appears in the very first strip, the early protagonist is the rather colorless Shermy. Lucy is a googly-eyed baby in a playpen; Linus and Schroeder are pre-verbal infants; and Snoopy is just a small, affectionate dog without a fantasy life. Even more odd, the strip's unique hilarity hasn't quite developed yet; most of the humor here is very mild and generally stems from the characters being little kids playing with each other and fooling around with grown-up roles. They're archetypes of children, not yet archetypes of humanity. Still, flashes of Schulz's later greatness are evident. All the characters show hints of the personalities they'll grow into, and Schulz's clean, magisterially expressive line falls into position by the end of the strip's second year. Regardless, the chance to see the early "Peanuts"—much of it never before reprinted—is a treat. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Charles Schulz and his magical creation are firmly embedded into the country's culture, and with good reason. Nobody needs my review to realize what an excellent comic strip he created. Chances are you already know and love at least one of his creations, be it Snoopy, Woodstock, Lucy or good old Charlie Brown himself. But what you may not realize is what a truly remarkable and outspoken man Schulz was. Included in this volume is a lengthy interview with Schulz that paints a full picture of the man. It discusses other comic strips and their creators, both influential and the "unprofessional". The interview demonstrates just how much uninterrupted work Schulz did, day after day. It is a thorough piece which offers an understanding of an artist who was truly unique. If you're a fan of "Peanuts", this volume is absolutely necessary. As tempting as it may be to start your collection with the year your most familiar with, resist the urge and savor these gems from the beginning.

Anyone trying to get a bead on American humor and cultural values during the latter half of the 20th century obviously has their work cut out for them, but they could do worse than to start with the comic strips of Charles Schulz. His "Peanuts" strips are pure Americana. This volume, the first of several encompassing the entirety of the comic strip's lifespan, shows us how it all began, and for that reason it's kind of fascinating. Both the drawings and the text are rudimentary compared to the "Peanuts" we know. Charlie Brown and especially Snoopy -- who unlike in later years doesn't express himself here -- look far different from what we're used to, and some of the "Peanuts" characters we're familiar with are nowhere to be found yet, such as Linus, who first appeared late in 1952."Peanuts" arguably hit its stride in the 1970's, and volumes featuring those strips are available as well. This volume may be considered essential for anyone determined to own "Peanuts" in its entirety, but that's a lot a books to buy, involving much time, money and fortitude. For those more interested in sampling Schulz' work over the decades, however, this is the obvious place to start.

I just love looking at the very first Peanuts comics. People don't seem to know that the original comic strips looked pretty different from how we've come to know charlie brown and the gang. Mr Schulz was just starting out with this gang and they definitely evolved over the years. You can certainly tell who everyone is, but there are noticeable differences. Snoopy looks very different.Years ago when I was in high school I wrote a report on the philosophy of peanuts. At the time I thought cutting up my peanuts books to illustrate my report (I believe I got an "A" by the way. perhaps that's just a skewed self serving memory) was a good idea. Now, years later I have lots of books with many pages missing or cut up. These compilation volumes are fantastic. If you are a peanuts fan, you can't go wrong.BOTTOM LINE: Charlie Brown and the gang were not always quite a wise in these first two years, but they're still spectacular. To have all these early comic strips reproduced so faithfully in this volume is just fantastic

Fast delivery, no issues. Well protected during delivery, came in great condition. Gave one as end of year teacher gift and got one for my son who already finished reading it. Especially loved the personal info about the artist and seeing the early stages of the characters and how they evolved. This was a big hit with my 3rd grader. Timeless comic strip - as his teacher noted in her Thank You note.

My grandmother is (still) a great collector of all things Snoopy. Back in the 70's, when I used to visit my grandmother's house, I remember spending a lot of time reading some of those early collections of Peanuts cartoon strips. They are one of the many great memories of my youth. Now, we have a collection of the very first Peanuts strips. Magnificent! How many of us still remember the beginning? So many things would grow and change. Violet and Patty (not Peppermint Patty) were Charlie Brown's "girlfriends" whom he could torment as much as he was tormented by them. Violet was actually the first to pull the football away from Charlie Brown. Snoopy was still a dog with no words. Schroeder is very prominent as a child prodigy with his love of piano and growing love of Beethoven. Charlie Brown is the catcher for the baseball team. Lucy & Linus make there first appearances. And so much more. Still, we can see this wonderful world taking shape and we can see how it will become to be this most beloved of comics. This volume also contains a nice introduction by Garrison Keillor and concludes with an interesting interview of Charles Schultz, enlightening us to some of his own feelings about his strip and what has become of the world of comics. As the first of a projected twenty-five volumes collecting all the Peanuts strips to be released every six months for the next twelve years, all I can say is I can't wait for volume 2.

From the Inside Flap

Three words. That’s all it took."I was writing a letter home to my mom when the call rang out across the American compound: 'Get it on!' And just like that, the course of my life changed forever.”Decorated U.S. military veteran-turned-country music star Keni Thomas gives a personal account of his heart-wrenching experiences in the chaotic 1993 Battle of Mogadishu to express a unique set of leadership lessons and inspired view of life’s greater purpose. Get It On! reminds readers “that we, as individuals, do indeed matter, that we are anything but ordinary, fully capable of carrying out life-changing assignments at any level and in any situation. We can make a difference in this world.”Today, Keni carries a guitar instead of a rifle and has shared his stories from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to overseas concerts for active soldiers, always passionate about the battle that “still shapes my thoughts on a daily basis.” Here, he writes to encourage the absolute best in those who are willing to answer whatever call God places on their lives.Keni Thomas was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge from the United States Army and fought the “Black Hawk Down” battle in Mogadishu, Somalia. He has since become an award-winning country musician and is the spokesperson for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and the “Hero Fund.” Inspired by Isaiah 6:8 (“Here am I; send me”), Keni also speaks to students and adults around the country about leadership, encouraging them to “Train as you fight. This is an outstanding book that is so much more than just a chronicle of the Battle of Mogadishu. Keni Thomas brings the reader into the battle and explains better than anyone I have ever read, how people can function with bullets flying around them. His contention that during the heat of battle, a soldier makes the conscious decision that "I may die here today, but my men - the man on my left and the man on my right - won't" helps the reader to understand how people in battle can continue to function when faced with their own mortality. The reader comes to meet others who were involved in the battle, how the battle began and how it ended. Keni also spends a large part of the book explaining the virtues of character and leadership. Not in terms of generals or leaders in government, but in terms of the soldiers, the boots on the ground, from the lowly private who only leads himself, to the lieutenants who worked tirelessly to make sure their men made it back. He believes that everyone is extraordinary and is capable of doing great things; the problem lies in their believing in themselves. His philosophy is summed up in his words: "Lead, follow, or get out of the way". Get It On! is an inspiring story of battle, friendship, and what is means to "lead the way".

You know the books you get so engrossed in that you don't want them to end? This was one of them for me. When I wondered why afterwards, considering I am not the type who goes out of her way to read stories of war, I realized it was because of the writing style. Keni Thomas is not writing a book: he's telling a story. You read this book, and he might as well be there talking to you about his time serving in the Army. This is the hallmark of a great story-teller. There are moments here when the author bares his soul. His voice gives truth to the reality of war and you know that every word is genuine. I once read a quote that said you should choose your authors as you choose your friends; Keni is someone you'll want as a friend. Speaking of quotes, he magically ties in quotes from a variety of sources into the themes of his tale. He also draws parallels with his Christian faith, which is done so honestly that believers and non-believers alike with open hearts will see something beautiful there. It is impossible to read this book and not take something inspirational out of it. Keni Thomas defines "leader" with more sincerity than many philosophers have. He is one of the few real authorities on the subject. Read this book and you'll see what I mean.

Get It On: What It Means To Lead The Way is the debut, non-fiction work of U.S. Army Ranger (and country music singer) Keni Thomas. It is his own personal account of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, the same conflict that was depicted in the film, "Black Hawk Down".This book is not simply a chronology of that fierce battle; it is an uncanny view of combat as seen through the eyes of a soldier who lived it ... lived through it ... and is now living above and beyond it.Ranger Thomas' writing voice is melodious. His narrative is smooth and flowing, resonating with personality, truth, insight, and humor. Thomas has a gift for storytelling that manages to entertain as well as educate the reader on the very sobering subject of war. He is able to achieve that by exposing a side of soldiers that very few civilians will ever see, the unexpected side that can find levity in the direst of circumstances, and the endearing side that teases and nicknames their comrades. As evidenced in this 222-page book, the camaraderie of soldiers is as sacred as any religion. Their bond is a selfless, sacrificial love that runs so deep that the life of the soldier standing to one's right or left becomes more important than self. To quote Ranger Thomas, "Men will fight for a cause. But they will die for each other."Get It On is unique when compared to other "war stories" in that it has much more to do with life than it does with death. It has to do with living life to its fullest. Ranger Thomas' words of encouragement and wisdom are applicable whether the reader is a career soldier, or has never donned a uniform. This work will appeal to people from all walks and stages of life.Readers who love Soldiers, Country, or God will find what they are looking for in this book ... pride, hope, and inspiration. For the reader who does not love Soldiers, Country, or God ... this book has the potential to change that.Get It On comes with my highest recommendation.Claudia Pemberton, ReviewerMidwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap

From the revered author of the classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities comes a new book that will revolutionize the way we think about the economy. Starting from the premise that human beings "exist wholly within nature as part of natural order in every respect," Jane Jacobs has focused her singular eye on the natural world in order to discover the fundamental models for a vibrant economy. The lessons she discloses come from fields as diverse as ecology, evolution, and cell biology. Written in the form of a Platonic dialogue among five fictional characters, "The Nature of Economies is as astonishingly accessible and clear as it is irrepressibly brilliant and wise-a groundbreaking yet humane study destined to become another world-altering classic.

It is no accident that Toronto is often rated as one of the most livable cities in North America -- Jane Jacobs lives there, and she takes an active role in helping shape her adopted city. She also does something original; she actively examines the topics she writes about, instead of relying upon the mere observations of others. When you use a chunk of granite, a bar of steel or the speed of light, it's worth knowing that inanimate objects don't change much. But, Jacobs and all other social scientists deal with people; and people are continually changing. One of her central themes is that since Adam Smith in 1776, economists have tended to ignore the real world. "Smith himself was partly responsible for that blind spot," Jacobs writes. "He led himself and others astray by declaring that economic specialization of regions and nations was more efficient than economic diversification. "The theorists after Smith retreated into their own heads instead of engaging ever more deeply with the real world," Jacobs writes. "Plenty of observable, germane facts were lying around in plain sight, ready and waiting to lead Smith's insights, straight as directional arrows, into the subjects of development and bifurcations." Adam Smith overturned centuries of thinking when he wrote, "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard for their own interest." Until then, there was a general feeling that God, or Nature, or other supernatural force provided our sustenance; Smith said personal interest is the key to economic life. Smith takes that idea the next step: Yes, natural products exist, but we can wipe them out by overuse. Every system in nature is harmed by over-indulgence; nothing can be exploited without some collateral cost. Excess carries the seeds of its own destruction; humans are a part of nature, and thus subject to similar limitations. Thus, the book's title -- "The Nature of Economies." Every society is a part of nature; people are always subject to the inevitable laws of nature. This isn't tree-hugging ecology or a `Save a Whale for Jesus' fad; it's the fundamental rules by which nature, and thus our communities, live on a day-to-day basis. Consider a real example: Phoenix literally "paves the desert." Twenty years ago, climatologists knew this raised night temperatures, because asphalt soaks up heat during the day and radiates at night. Night temperatures have risen by almost 10 degrees -- which adds immensely to air conditioning bills, and greatly reduces livability. Yet, city officials steadfastly ignore this feedback to pursue a policy of unlimited growth. Is this unusual? Think of Los Angeles traffic, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, El Paso, and Tucson -- each with its own growing problems. Jacobs argues the "nature of economies" means being aware of feedback, and facing issues before they become a crisis. Despite her living in Toronto, do Canadians do it? No, Canadians ignored overfishing of the Grand Banks -- once the richest fishing area in the world -- until the area was fished out which caused the economy of Newfoundland to collapse. In brief, that's her lesson. Ignore feedback, ignore the evidence in front of our eyes, and we'll have economic and social collapse. Nature never offers "Get out of Jail Free" cards. Unlike many ecologists, Jacobs doesn't offer simplistic "get rid of the automobile" solutions. She says problems will arise whatever we do; the solution is in recognizing the feedback, then responding to the problem. In other words, "Look around." Then ask, "What can we do different?" She doesn't offer solutions; she offers thought processes to enable intelligent people to find solutions. Does she have a valid point? Well, Toronto officials listen to her, and have one of the best cities in North America. It's time her audience was expanded.

She was not an economist, developer, architect, city planner, or politician, but she was skillful in combining all of this drawing conclusions in this book.

This is the second work I have read by Jane Jacobs (the first being her widely and well-known Death and Life of Great American Cities) and it reinforces my notion that during her life she authored a sparkling well of common sense from which every individual should draw deeply.

Jane Jacobs is a bit like Agatha Christie. A no nonsense view of economics and the city as an economic engine. I do sometimes wish she would look a little deeper into the policies she references.

Although I have the deepest admiration for Jane Jacobs, a national treasure (of two countries!) and the author of an all-time classic book -- "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" -- I have to say that I found "The Nature of Economies" to be a real mixed bag...actually kind of a letdown.First, I have to agree with other reviewers who found the "dialogue" in this book to be almost laughably bad. I mean, obviously no human being would possibly speak this way ("in sum," "to repeat," "to be sure") with friends -- or anyone else, I would hope! Second, the whole Socratic dialogue, pedantic monologue format here can get very tiresome at times. In fact, it's so bad that even its own characters keep nodding off! Third, most of these ideas, although interesting, are nothing original (as Jacobs' extensive endnotes prove), although obviously Jacobs has done a great deal of reading, and has synthesized or at least summarized other peoples' ideas fairly well, and that is nothing to sneeze at. Fourth, and more problematic in my opinion, is the high degree of abstraction, and apparent lack of practical utility, with much of Jacobs' ideas. I mean, it's fascinating and all that human economies are part of nature, but what are the real-life policy implications here? OK, so central planning is bad, but does that mean that Jacobs is in favor of an extreme laissez-faire capitalist approach by government? (I doubt it) Is Jacobs so optimistic to believe that if we just let things run their natural course, that everything will just all work out for the best? If she does believe this, is it naiveté or brilliance? Or is this just a bunch of Panglossian nonsense? After reading this book, I have to say that in many ways I have no idea exactly WHAT Jacobs is getting at here. Worst of all, "The Nature of Economies" begs the most important question, namely, WHAT ARE ECONOMIES FOR (Jacobs' unsatisfying answer - economies are for everything and everybody...huh?!?)?Having said all of this, I still think the book is worth reading, mainly because it is filled with interesting, thought-provoking ideas - whoever came up with them - two of the biggest ones being that humans (and their economies) are part of nature, and that the more they "biomimic" (imitate nature) the better off we will all be. Of course, the counterargument to mimicking nature is that nature isn't just a bed of roses, so to speak! As the curmudgeon character Armbruster puts it, all this happy talk of "cooperation, symbiosis, interdependence" seems to ignore the fact that nature is very much "red in tooth and claw." Instead, it ends up sounding "like a barn raising," not the nasty survival of the fittest ("and the devil take the hindmost" in Armbrusters' words) that is part and parcel of nature, as much as we try to romanticize or ignore it. I DO very much like Jacob's emphasis on the benefits of a complex web of interrelationships, and also on the importance of working ALONG with natural principles, not against them. In general, Jacobs' view that life at its best is a hustling beehive (or tropical rainforest) of activity and diversity, as in the crooked streets and serendipitous mixings of a thriving city, is strong and positive. I also agree with her that non-serendipitous, sterile suburbia, with its de facto separation of different kinds of people - rich/ poor, white/black/hispanic, gay/straight, etc. (see the 2000 US Census for proof of this), its often de jure separation of commercial (and cultural) activities from residential areas, and its monocultures of identical houses in subdivisions surround by wide, fast, straight roads (which serve to reduce pedestrian traffic, force utter dependence on automobiles, and prevent healthy development of community), is not good at all, and simply maintained by massive government subsidies (of roads, gasoline, utilities, etc.).So, the bottom line is that - even in her 80s -- Jane Jacobs still has a lot to say and contribute, even though she said it far better 40 years ago. So, sure, read "The Nature of Economies," but even better, go back and read (or reread) the Jacobs' classic work - "The Death and Life of Great American Cities!"
