I've been doing import and export for over 8 years. This book will help anyone wanting to get into this line of work. Just so every one knows it's not an easy thing and a lot of money can be lost, the book makes it seem like it's very easy make sure you have all your steps covered so if you lose money it's not as much.

This book is absolutely amazing. Being a novice I knew very little about import/export, but this book really hit a home run. It takes you through all of the important information that you really need to know about the subject.The section about rules and regulations in this book was very important and informative. How to organize your import and export operation was illuminating.Of special interest was the chapter about Ali Baba.com. The process of doing research on this site was very interesting and certainly worthwhile reading.One of the most important chapters was “identifying your target market and finding customers”. This without a doubt is the key to any successful business. In this chapter the author for gives you some real world pointers on how to go about this process.The chapter on “negotiating around the world” was very interesting. It pointed out things that I was not aware.This book really takes you from the beginning stages of what you need to know to becoming a successful importer/exporter. The book ‘import/export kit for dummies “is a gold mine of information. I would highly recommend this book to others. The author seems to really know his stuff and his market.

I don't like the title, just because I don't think you are a dummy because you do not know something. At any rate the book is useful and has some good information if you are interested in getting into the import or export business.

There should be an assumption that by the time a business person is ready to start exporting they have achieved a bit of business knowledge but I think the author took the "Dummies" thing too seriously. So, if you do have a bit of business background, wading thru the "Dummies" part of a bit boring. Otherwise the subject is covered very well.

Learning about exporting and this is a good starter to answer basic questions. Easy read for someone who has no knowledge off exporting. Dummies books are just easy to understand.

This is a great guide on how to get started in the import/export business. It does provide a lot of resources on who to contact for some specific goods and some markets.

Great useable information for both the experienced and novice business person looking to expand or become familiar with the international business market. Easy steps to read and follow on the ins and outs of importing and exporting.

My girlfriend tried using this guide, as one would Frommer's or Fodor's (see my reviews), and became a bit frustrated. Two issues `twisted her lemon', one was the paltry lack of information on important locations (Salisbury and its magnificent cathedral gets 58 words, Stonehenge a short paragraph) and the other was the difficult and demanding way the guide connects the hotel descriptions to the maps.Regarding the first point, the title of the guide is very clear about what it covers: Hotel's and Itineraries. It is not a country guide.Karen Brown's selections of hotels are excellent and her comments and appraisals are `spot-on. She writes as one who has actually stayed at each establishment, who has met the owners or managers, and one who paints a picture of what you will find and the experiences that you should have when using one of these select properties. Great. That said you should know before purchasing this guide that these hotel selections are some of the most unique and best in the UK. Therefore, they are not for those on a shoestring or moderate budget; but rather, as the financially well-endowed would say, these guides are for those with "discriminating tastes." Her website, karenbrown.com, is worth a visit and you can check out the various accommodations listing in greater detail.Besides top notch unique accommodations, the guide gives you nine extraordinary driving itineraries that wind you through the very best regions of England, Wales & Scotland. This is what the book is all about. Nada mas. I kindly pointed this out to my girlfriend.Regarding the second point, the guide is cumbersome. Karen Brown needs to make finding the hotels, which correspond to dot on her maps, much easier. Her driving itineraries are in the front of the book, and the recommended hotels in the last part of the book and there is no simple reference between the two. There are much better ways to set this up. Karen Brown needs to learn from the major guide publishers. They could help her a lot here. Also, her driving itinerary maps are very remedial and could be much better.If you have money, love to drive and you want unique, superior accommodations, get this guide, you won't be disappointed. This guide is very useful, especially when used in tandem with a good country guide, like Fodor's or Frommer's mentioned above. Recommended

Very scientific. Very thorough. Might be a bit too nerdy for most people. Definitely written for the neuroscience freak who likes food. For people that curious to know why things work. What is a flavor image. It won't prepare you to cook any differently. It won't help you to win any culinary awards. What it will do, is provide a solid appreciation for the profound miracle that occurs when the perfect bite hits your tongue.

This is a pretty interesting look at how your brain perceives and remembers flavor, a deeper understand of how flavor works and how to achieve certain feelings and flavors. I recommend this book to anybody in the food industry looking to understand the science of flavor a bit further to develop their craft. Definitely not a stand alone book but a good way to start!

After the decent introduction this book plummets into the black hole of bad science writing. Nothing can save it because Shepherd doesn't really have anything new or cohesive to say about psychology and flavor. Lots of big names are tossed around (McGee, Beauchamp, Wrangham, Sclafani, etc.), but this just makes him and his research feel shallow. A quick look at the puny bibliography shows how little effort Shepherd put into the book.Strangely, reviewers haven't commented on the bad writing, but they have said the book is "a dense read." This didn't turn me off from the book because I don't mind dense reads if the material is necessarily dense. But this book is needlessly dense. Here's a quick example of a sentence:"Just as the muscles of the nostril manipulate the inhalation of air, so are they coordinated to direct the air streams into the snout." (23)What? Why is this written as a parallel sentence? Instead of nostril muscles "manipulating the inhalation of air," can they just breathe in or sniff instead? Are they "coordinated to direct the air streams," or do they just direct the air streams? The book is made up of these sentences, and together with the name dropping, the result is a rambling 200-page lecture given by a pretentious Yale professor. Even more pretentious than Herve This, because although both authors baptize a new field, at least This was French and poorly translated.

Very interesting read. A bit repetitive but still very educational.

I'm a molecular gastronomy geared chef and read this book to get new insights into ways to manipulate my diners' experiences. I was not disappointed. Shepherd does an excellent job of walking you through each step and train of thought that ultimately gets us to flavor, and yes, it is repetitive as Shepherd writes as I can only assume he teaches classes (start off with a summary, give new material, end with summary), but that repetition was useful for me as a practitioner trying to chew my way through very dense matter. Even some of the most basic knowledge has changed the way I now cook - for example, I questioned the role of oil based flavors v. water based flavors in extending flavor in my customers as they exhale after each bite.It is not a light read, and certainly not a read for someone with just a passing interest, but for people who want a deep understanding of the interaction between brain, body and food, this certainly will satiate your thirst for the subject.

As a chemist, I can vouch for the thoroughness and scientific validity.

About the Author

Born in India on January 5, 1893, Paramahansa Yogananda devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Mrinalini Mata, one of his closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 2011. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

Yogananda's Gita is a mainstay in my life, but it was always a challenge traveling with the two-volume set. This book is a terrific read, but not on Kindle. I started reading on my Kindle copy, but it is essential to be able to see the symbols. The symbols are either embedded in the text or are shown as small illustrations embedded in the text. Given that they are what the book is about, they are essential. They are much too small and faint to see. Enlarging the text does not enlarge the symbol that the text is talking about.There is a way to enlarge the small illustrations, but these enlargements are too faint to see on my Kindle Paperwhite. There is no way to enlarge the symbols that are part of the text. I give credit to those who produced this Kindle edition for doing the best they could with the images, but it is simply not enough.I have ordered a print copy of this book and will write more when I can read the rest of it. I am enjoying it so much that it will be hard for me to wait to read more of it (even missing as much as I am) because it is so very well done.

In our current era of hackers who break into computer code this story highlights real people who by dint of what we would now think of as primitive resources such as 3x5 cards and diligent searching and matching and mathematical skill uncover the secrets of Linear B. At first blush Linear B looks like chicken scratches on clay tablets. It was in fact a written language at first thought to be Minoan. Later at the end of the search it was deemed to be very early Greek (about 500 years early). A key player, who was never recognized for her efforts, was the American Alice Kober, a classist who died just before the big discovery. The baton of cryptogaphy was picked up by Micheal Ventris, an eccentric English architect. He made the final breakthrough. The participants in this real drama are bought to life in this historical detective stroy, copiously illustrated with Linear B with an attractive book cover and very artistic artwork on the inner flaps.

I was once an army cryptographer so I'm drawn to such books, but if you don't have my background and decide The Riddle of the Labyrinth is not for you, you'll be mistaken. There's a great deal for every reader in its pages.I read Fox's book on my Kindle and was so fascinated by it that I wanted to have the lengthy end notes to turn to while reading and bought the hardcover to reread. I don't remember the last book that compelled me to do this.The Riddle is not only the breaking of the Linear B Minoan code but how the code broke the unique people who were drawn to it.Don't imagine that this book is as dry as the the earth that gave up the ancient tablets written in Linear B. It's a great detective and biography story rolled into one book. Highly recommended.

I'd heard about the riddle of Linear B, solved long before I was born, but had never heard the story of how it was unraveled. The tale is far more interesting and human than the content of the texts we have in Linear B.Margalit Fox has long written obituaries for the New York Times, but as I understand this is her first book. There is something about her style which strikes me as "relentlessly fair". I felt I came away with a sense of each of the major players as people and professionals largely devoid of speculation, which I admire.This book is as remarkable for being an account of research in wartime as it is of deciphering an ancient language. It should give us pause to consider the conditions under which scholars operated in the mid-20th century, when WWII interrupted not only the communication and travel channels of academics, but their supplies of paper, ink, food and fuel. The scholars in this tale could not take correspondence for granted, and sent their manuscripts to Europe packed alongside instant soup and oranges preserved in wax. As late as 1948, fuel rations in England could only keep the temperature in Cambridge's libraries at around 50 F. Think about that for a moment, and consider doing what these people did under similar circumstances.Fox devotes one section to each of the people she sees as having been most important in the decryption of Linear B scripts. First, she tackles the archaeologist Arthur Evans, who unearthed the series of clay tablets while excavating the Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete in 1902. Evans fell in love with the culture he imagined flourished on Crete or, more accurately, with his own ideas about it. Evans became one of the grandfathers of modern archaeology, and even his unsupported theories held sway for decades after his death.Second, Fox seeks to restore to prominence the contributions of Alice Elizabeth Kober, a professor of classics at Brooklyn College. Kober spent nearly two decades obsessively devoted to solving the problem of Linear B, working mostly alone at her kitchen table, but corresponding with dozens of scholars. She took a calculated, scientific, and incredibly effort-intensive approach, essentially building an analog database on hand-made punch cards. It was a brilliant move, as it freed her from conscious and unconscious assumptions that derailed other attempts. It seems she was considered one of the leaders in the field in her own time, but a combination of financial limitations, gender bias and tragedy kept her from devoting her life to researching Linear B full-time before her early death in 1950. It seems Kober's primary occupation was known only to the handful of scholars working seriously on Linear B. She did not publish much in her short life, and was by all accounts a fairly introverted person who did occasional give lectures, but never enjoyed public speaking. Ventris himself did not give her sufficient credit for building the extensive foundation that allowed him to crack Linear B two years after her death, but then again it may simply be that he himself did not live long enough to give credit where credit was due. Kober's papers have only recently become accessible to scholars, and they demonstrate just how extensive her correspondence was with the leading scholars working on Linear B, and how vital her contribution was to the ultimate solution.Third, Fox turns to the genius who finally cracked the code, a young architect named Michael Ventris. Ventris was a savant in terms of both quantitative reasoning and language acquisition. He knew dozens of languages, and could pick up a new one at the drop of a hat. Ventris became interested in Linear B as a boy, partly as an escape from his cold and unhappy upbringing. In every phase of life, Linear B became something of a refuge for Ventris; he allegedly brought his decryption materials on board the RAF bomber where he served as navigator during WWII. However, it's possible that the tortured inner world that drove Ventris so completely into complex intellectual puzzles got the best of him in the end.Evans, Kober and Ventris each devoted much of their lives to decoding Linear B, often to the exclusion of family, friends or other official responsibilities. Something about the lure of this puzzle compelled each of them to spend hours, months and years cracking the code. Margalit Fox does an admirable job in exploring the personalities, motivations and methods of each of them, and how each provided an indispensable piece of the solution.

A friend recommended this when I was talking about the Voynich manuscript and I'm so happy she did! I especially like the way it's divided into three sections, each featuring a different person's involvement: 1-Discovery, 2-Significant progress in translation, and 3-Success in translation. It offers interesting insight into the life and personalities of the main players in each section, as well as techniques and methods used. After reading this it's easy to appreciate the decades long difficulty of translating text which uses unknown engravings in an unknown language.

Very comprehensive. I like the organizations and breakdowns and detail. It's a little too big to fit in your pocket however. You might be able to keep it on your cart or in a large, storage-style clipboard. But as for me, I don't carry it with me on the unit. Makes a better reference for when I get home and want to clarify something I ran into during the day.
