Incredible Resource a National Board must have. I first discovered Page's "Uncovering Student Ideas" series when I began my National Board certification process. The prompts provided me with lots of great class discussion prompts and quick assessments I could use with my students to identify the misconceptions they had on the big ideas of Science. I have used the entire series for assessing student understanding, small and large group class discussions, and to fill those 5 or 10 minute "unexpected" moments that arise during the day. The prompts are so popular, students beg to do them because they feel like,"We learn so much!" I used the series Uncovering Student Ideas in Science in two of my workshops on lecture-free teaching. These sessions were for high school and middle school science teachers. In one instance, the teachers (with whom I had worked previously) picked one of the formative assessments, tried it in their classrooms before the scheduled workshop date, and reported to the rest of the group about how it worked. In the second instance, I brought the books to the workshop and gave the teachers about 30 minutes to find an assessment appropriate for one of their classes, make copies for the other participants, and try the assessment on the workshop participants. Purchased to aid in 5th grade science instruction.
I really like the author,s approach to learning through probes. Clearly identifies students misconceptions and clears the way for learning. Encourages classroom discussions as well. I only wish there was one book covering Earth Science only, however it is not enough to take a star away. The book is a great resource and will purchase the others as well.
Science Probes that are ready to copy.
I use many of these mini-problems to begin lessons, or as "tickets out the door." There is a lot of variety in content and it is age and reading-level appropriate to my 8th graders.
This book is AMAZING! I love giving these little scenarios to my students and seeing what their preconceived notions are about science. Fantastic book, I plan on buying all of the Keeley probes!
In this volume I found many useful insights, as well as examples, fro creating investigative and assessment probes to assist me in preparing lesson plans that work and help me with my decisions on how to differentiate my instruction to best meat the needs of my students. This book is more worth much more than the small investment.
I like the material in the book and have immediately begun using the probes in my classroom. So far the assessment are simple and easy for students to response and for me to me get useful information about student thinking. This was a new tool I was really looking forward to trying for the first time. So far, so good!
This is a great tool for me to use to help with my students! It gives me one more way to see if they already have a grasp on the basics so I do not waste their time. Easy to follow and adjusted for multiple grades
