I'm not married yet, but I'm getting there and am in a committed relationship with a man who has a little boy. I don't have kids myself and honestly at the beginning of the relationship was slightly terrified at the prospect of becoming a stepmother. However, this book has helped me proactively prepare (mentally and physically) in ways to interact and love on my to-be stepson. One thing I loved about this book was that it completely focused on how we are only adequate through God's grace and Jesus' forgiveness. It helped me get rid of the idea that I'm supposed to be some "perfect" step mom but instead that I can rest in God's grace and his guidance in my life. It was also realistic with expectations of what relationships may look like or play out to be - even if it was hard for me to read. No fairy tale expectations, but instead grace, love, hard work and the reward of knowing we can love on our stepchildren while serving the Lord who put us there for a purpose.
I've read several books on step-parenting, blending families, and similar topics, but this is the BEST book yet. There were so many times in my head I was yelling, "Yes! That is me! That is us!" This book provides validation that what I am experiencing is normal, workable, and sometimes comical. I love the way the authors are 'real' in their anecdotes, expectations, and range of emotions, all while reminding the reader how to navigate this uncharted territory with the love, grace, and mercy of Christ. This book is comforting, encouraging, and empowering; go ahead and order it!
As a stepmom myself for 20 years, I've read a lot of stepparenting books and understand the stepmom journey. The positive tone this book offers in regards to the stepmom role is valuable—unlike too many stepparenting books that paint a negative picture of blended families.A key point this book emphasizes is that our worth is not based on how others see us or treat us, or even on how good a job we’re doing as a stepmom—because we will fail!— but on how God sees us. It’s so easy to get hung up on our insecurities when our stepchildren disregard our efforts or we don’t live up to our expectations or those of our spouse and feel defeated in our role. But our success as stepmoms isn’t on the outcome of the stepmom-stepchild relationship but instead, whether we allow God to guide us in our role (our attitudes and behaviors) and allow His love and grace to flow through us to our stepchildren.There are a lot of other great tips on how to define your role, dealing with the ex, protecting your marriage, the importance of forgiveness and trust, and much more! I recommend this book to any stepmom, regardless of what stage of the journey you're in—you will find nuggets of gold to guide you!
I love this book!!! They are so real about how difficult it can be as a step-mom. The realization that I'm not alone has been a true comfort. It helped me evaluate my perception of what my role as a step-mom looks like and change my mindset that has been holding me hostage with self-condemnation for not being what I thought a step-mom should be. Whew! What a relief! A huge weight has been lifted! I recommend this book for ALL step-moms, whether you're new to it, or have been on this road for a while.
I bought this book because of the Christian perspective, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I found the chapter about dealing with the ex-wife super helpful - an area where I struggle most. As there are always challenges with step parenting, I am grateful for the shared experiences of the authors and their suggested Bible verses to keep in my heart focused as I’m growing with my new family.
This book helps keep me centered and focus on the real task. I read just a little bit each day to keep my mind on God and my husband and it helps keep my mouth in check.
I recommend this book to any stepmoms but especially those early on in the position. Being a step-parent is a difficult job and this book provides concrete steps and real-like examples to help along the way. I discovered this book very late in my step parenting role. The major of my situations would have been very different if I had this excellent advice at that time.
This book gave me peace and helped me realize it's ok to think and feel a certain way and that I'm totally normal!
