What a fun and interesting read. This was probably the most interesting beer book I’ve read in awhile, partly due to its deft narrative and partly due to its more niche focus.The first several chapters offer an overview of the history of lager. To call it a “history” makes it sound boring, though, which it definitely isn’t. A better way of putting it is that the author tells the fascinating story of lager. Much of this story involves the geographic circumstances that impacted various lager sub-styles, which, if you’re a BJCP judge or Cicerone, should be very interesting and useful to you. Ultimately, due to a series of happy accidents, lager beer brewing was swept up in other advances of civilizations and spread throughout the world in line with migratory patterns. Along the way, the author debunks some commonly held beliefs about the Reinheitsgebot.The author weaves the origins and development of lager with that of modern science and technology. It’s amazing how much of that science and technology, which we still rely on today, was developed because of lager beer. Likewise, the author explains how lager brewers’ adoption of fledgling technologies (e.g., refrigeration, shipping methods) and advertising methods prior to other industries and/or competitors helped catapult its rise and eventual dominance over ale.The author inadvertently dispels many of the romantic notions we may have about beer and the brewing industry by drawing parallels to other industries, commodities, and business practices. Beer production is subject to the same business concerns ($$) as other industries, which has impacted the end result and lead to the fizzy yellow stuff we know today.Part of the joy of reading this book is the presentation and format. It’s full of beautiful pictures and the hardcover binding just makes it nice to read. Another thing that stands out about this book is its clarity and accessibility. The author just writes well. No typos, either; can’t say that about a lot of newer brewing books. I really enjoyed the detailed bibliography, and look forward to reading “Beer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance” by Richard Unger.Definitely review the table of contents before buying, because this book’s title is clickbait-y, misleading and, really, a major exaggeration. This book is in no way “The Definitive Guide to Tasting and Brewing the World’s Most Popular Beer Styles.” (I suspect this was the publisher’s phrasing and not the author’s.) For one thing, the first 97 pages of text of this book (out of 223) are devoted to history and the story of lager and have nothing to do with tasting or brewing procedure. Only 4 pages are devoted to sensory evaluation (108-111). If you want to read a “definitive guide” to tasting lager (and all other beer), you’ll need to read “Tasting Beer” by Randy Mosher. And as good as this book’s section on brewing procedure is, it is also not anything close to “definitive,” a point explicitly acknowledged by the author when he writes that the brewing processes discussed are not explained “comprehensively” (168). For something “definitive” on brewing lagers, read “How to Brew” by John Palmer or "New Brewing Lager Beer" by Greg Noonan. Likewise, the section on glassware and serving is prefaced that everything discussed thereafter are “suggestions, not gospel.” And that’s just fine, because no one should dictate how you serve and drink your beer.The section listing examples of various lager sub-styles with tasting notes is fun, but is likely to be somewhat outdated in just a few years. Be aware of that if you’re buying several years after the publication date.In the end, you’ll come away with a satisfying explanation of why classic lager styles originated and continue to be brewed in Germany/Central Europe. I’m happy to say that I learned something new in every chapter, despite a decade of homebrewing and experience as a BJCP judge.

Top quality printing with a relief hardback cover. Engagingly written with an appreciation of beer history, and an obvious affection for the overlooked lager style among craft brewers. I liked the research, stories behind the breweries, regions and personalities that have been a part of this beer style. Lager beers are a little more 'sophisticated' to make at home than ales, now I want to explore this for myself. The 20 recipes in the book are a great starting point.

This book strikes a really good balance between history, how-to, reference information, and general fun. I would have liked it to be a couple thousand pages longer and really delved in depth into each of those areas but I can understand a publisher not being interested in that. Certainly worth getting but if you need really detailed information you're going to need additional resources.

Really great book. Short of the industrial/professional manuals he references, this is the best book on lager brewing available today. Well balanced between history, techniques, chemistry/biology, and recipes, it is well accessible to any intermediate or advanced brewer interested in this type of brewing. There are nuggets of knowledge here that you can't find anywhere else. The only downside is it leaves you wanting more.

"Lager" is an easy read that is very well written and information packed.I especially liked the chapters about the "history of lager beers" and "fermentation and conditioning". In the past I've brewed a couple of lagers not really understanding what I was doing. Now after reading "Lager" I'm going to brew one of the recipes included in the book - "Fearless Youth Munich Dunkel". After reading this book I now understanding why I have always like lager beers so much!

Kudos to the author for putting together a great book on Lager. I own several books on brewing beer and beer styles, but the layout of this book that keeps you wanting to turn the next page.
