About the Author

Kirk J. Schneider, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and leading spokesperson for contemporary humanistic psychology. He is current editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, vice-president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute, and an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook Graduate School and the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Schneider has published over 100 articles and chapters and has authored or edited seven books (one more is in preparation), The Paradoxical Self: Toward an Understanding of Our Contradictory Nature; Horror and the Holy: Wisdom-Teachings of the Monster Tale; The Psychology of Existence: An Integrative, Clinical Perspective (with Rollo May; currently being translated into Chinese); The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology: Leading Edges in Theory, Research and Practice (with J. Bugental and F. Pierson); Rediscovery of Awe: Splendor, Mystery, and the Fluid Center of Life; Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy: Guideposts to the Core of Practice (Chapter 5 currently being translated into Russian); and Awakening to Awe (in press). If you are conceptualizing cases or a student that is interested in learning the basics of humanistic-existential psychotherapy (and what it looks like in practice on a practical level) then this short book (180ish pages) is a great place to start. Kirk Schneider frequently cites other existential authors like Yalom, May and Elkins and does an excellent job of bringing it all together.

A good read and very insightful regarding the existential-humanistic approach to counseling. Many components will work well in my professional career.

Don't be mislead by the brevity of this little book. It has a depth of insight that brings traditional Existential-Humanistic theory into the contemporary dialogue. Combining theory and vignettes, this book makes a good introduction to the approach as well as a potent refresher of main themes.

Very one-dimensional take of integration of two major fields of therapy. Make sure you read the description thoroughly and decide if this matches up with your orientation. While I am both humanistic and existential in my practice, this book was worlds away from my views.

I bought this book because I'm getting a masters in clinical psych and I love it. Anyone studying to become a counselor or even just interested in this field should read this as well as other therapies. Very helpful and interesting.

This review is by Robert M Rice's wife. For some reason a review of A Wilder Place piqued my interest, and I ordered the book and read it. I have been married to my geologist husband for almost 40 years, and we are finally having fun talking about geology. He is so happy. And so am I. This book sparked that interest in me because I really wanted to understand it. It's not an easy book and assumes a bit more knowledge of geology than I think is common. but it's worth the effort. Sure makes you want to go visit Greenland, too. So thanks Bill Glassley for opening up a whole new earth to me. My husband handed me one of his favorite books Hard Road West: History and Geology along the Gold Rush Trail which I also avidly read and recommend to anyone who wants a better understanding of the forces that raised (and dug out) all those obstacles that harried the tough and often tender people who thought it was a good idea to get in a wagon and go look for treasure in California. That book also helped me to better understand the tectonic significance of Mr. Glassley's (and his colleagues') discoveries in the isolated magnificence of Greenland.

Firstly, the book is far shorter than the 222 numbered pages. The Table of Contents is on page 11; Chapter 1 begins on page 27. More than 20+ additional pages could easily be deleted by removing all the blanks. The maps are full page and extremely helpful. Secondly, the book is a typical nature experience but in a very atypical location. The author brings the reader to bare cliffs and barren ground. We become immersed within the quiet and timelessness of the visit. We measure lichen growth rate, experience unusual sound acoustics and rapidly changing weather. Too bad the author did not take advantage and provide more of his personal experiences. Lastly, so much more geology could be included. The reader visits varying locations which become a moment for reflection rather than a teachable moment. The author provides a perfect example about his own epiphany when listening to a college professor provide a condensed story of a rock outcrop during an undergraduate field trip. The book is well written and provides a glimpse into a space above the Arctic Circle. So much could have been added to, at least, provide the intended 222 pages. I rate the work as a 4 only because of the intimate look at coastal Greenland. Otherwise, I belief the book is a 3.

Glassley gives an entertaining, in places even lyrical, account of geological fieldwork in West Greenland. He accompanied two Danish colleagues on their quest to "salvage their reputations as field geologists". Their earlier fieldwork in the area had been severely criticized by another field team, which had published their findings and (re-)interpretations in a lengthy paper. Glassley takes pains to avoid giving a reference to the paper or naming the authors (I wonder why - a quick literature search provides all the details). Glassley recounts how the studies "second time around" fully bear out the earlier work and indeed lead to an enhanced geological history of the area, all in terms readily understood by the lay reader.

Solid very mesmerizing science, careful simple and elegant prose. This author has the gift of language that enables him to put beauty before us so well that we can see it through his experiences, without allowing himself to drift astray into distracting excess. It seems to be a long (although not long enough) haiku.... he has given us a gift. This will surely influence budding scientists/poets for years.

I'm a geologist and very interested in climate change and its effects on our world. This book gives a scientific and yet personal view of that changing world that I found very engaging.

I am glad I got this book. I wish it included pictures of some of the major rock formations.

Written by a geologist with the soul of a poet.

Beautifully written, a poetic view of Greenland, that I felt through the auther’s heart and soul. It challenged me to take a deeper look at where I am in my view of the land in which I live in. What is my contribution to Mother Earth? A must read for all, and to be read now.

This book is mostly about the positive aspects of blitzscaling, and while it acknowledges the risks, it doesn't go into much depth to analyze lessons learned from blitzscaling failures.Reading this book reminded me of my own personal experience consulting for the search engine company AltaVista in the late 1990s. Many considered AltaVista to be the best search engine before Google really hit the scene. The venture capital company CMGi bought AltaVista and embarked on a major blitzscaling effort. CMGi wanted to compete with Yahoo to create a web directory portal for just about everything and spread resources wide and thin, and then allowed the AltaVista core search technology to get rusty. This created an opening for Google to dominate AltaVista with perfectionist attention to detail in search technology. In this particular case, AltaVista was the one attempting the (failed) blitzscaling while Google followed more traditional product perfection strategies.The book also made me think about the articles I've been reading in the Wall Street Journal regarding Tesla and Elon Musk's current challenges blitzscaling across so many different business areas -- especially with Model 3 production and their solar roof tile delays. Now I understand better why Elon Musk doesn't seem to care that much about perfecting product roll-out execution ahead of time, instead always thinking about the next futuristic revolution and then figure out the implementation as-it-goes. Coincidentally Elon Musk was also one of the founders of PayPal along with the author of this book. The book doesn't talk much about Tesla, but I can see the common philosophy. I can see why blitzscaling contributed to Tesla's success (so far).I take away a better understanding of why some companies engage in blitzscaling hyper growth as their #1 priority, and why this is such a powerful technique to overwhelm the competition. This book reveals some really interesting techniques to grow the customer base, organizational strategies depending on the size of the company, and management styles. There is good depth in this book with specific examples that the author curates for a course at Stanford University.Since there are a relatively small number of company founders/executives who have the funds to engage in a massive blitzscaling operation, I think most copies of this book will end up in these hands: 1. stock traders (including the everyday investor) who are looking to identify companies that are executing hyper growth strategies for better investment returns, and 2. people who enjoy reading interesting Silicon Valley business cases for insight on how this mysterious world of venture capital encourages companies to risk it all-or-nothing and take off like a rocket ship.Overall I highly recommend this book to learn the benefits of blitzscaling. It's very interesting to read, it's sometimes hard to put the book down because there's something useful on every page. Just don't expect much depth about companies that attempted blitzscaling and failed while trying, this book is more about success business cases.

Given the author's experience, I was disappointed to find Blitzscaling little more than a beginners overview of the well-known patterns around modern fast-growth companies. If you've never heard of Network Effects, Moore's Law, or Viral Effects, then you will find this an enlightening book. It explains these concepts and others like them quite well, but there is not much here that's new or especially insightful. The best use for this book would be in a community college course titled "Basics of Software Company Growth."

I'd bet almost everyone senior in Silicon Valley has come across Reid in their career. He's an indispensable member of the ecosystem as investor, operator, mentor, and thought leader. This book shares his gathered wisdom on the scaling of hypergrowth organizations in a fast-changing present to win the future. Not only essential reading for startup execs, but also for general business folks who need to grapple w/the role of technology disrupting their business.

There are some excellent management insights regarding blitzscaling your organization touching critical areas such as management innovation, business model innovation, and hiring practices. However, the rest of the book is less practical. By that I mean the book includes general advice, higher level talk or unpractical arguments on important issues regarding blitzscaling such as social responsibility, addressing the competition which also can use blitzscaling, resource management etcetera. However, as mentioned above, these areas are touched on a high level and fail on giving practical examples of how these tips and tricks are used in reality. I am sure the authors will follow-up with a practical guide but until then I give it a 4 star.

If you win, efficiency isn’t that important; if you lose, efficiency is completely irrelevant.”The book discusses many of the most well-known, fastest growing and currently most valuable companies, including: Airbnb, Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn/Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Uber and others. A couple years ago when Uber was raising money at a $60 billion private valuation, it may have been difficult to understand the astronomical valuation, but Blitzscaling presents a solid argument for it. If Uber uses inexpensive capital to subsidize both sides of the market when it enters a new city, it has a substantially stronger likelihood of quickly capturing significant share. Uber has a chicken and egg scenario as both sides of the market need to be built simultaneously for Uber to be successful. Uber needs to recruiter drivers to ‘supply’ rides, needs to acquire customers (‘demand’ for rides). By utilizing economical capital to subsidize drivers (paying drivers a higher percentage or bonuses as additional incentives to join the platform) and subsidizing passengers (with cheaper rides to incentivize them to try the new platform), Uber achieves massive momentum from dual-sided network effects.The story of Airbnb is fascinating, and an area that can easily be overlooked is how customer-obsessed they were from the very beginning. “Paul Graham, the cofounder of Y Combinator, wrote a famous essay in which he advised entrepreneurs to do things that don’t scale.” This advice may seem counterintuitive (especially in a book about Blitzscaling), but it is vital to developing an optimal product. Totally unbelievable story, poorly written. There is inadequate character development. The heros’ ability to consistently escape from an overwhelming number of well armed cartel members and their murderous jefe if just beyond belief.

This is the 4th book in the series and brings back characters from previous novels. It is helpful to read his books in order. I enjoy reading books that use the Florida Keys as the location for the story (I can visualize where everything is taking place) due to my frequent vacations over many years and personal knowledge of the area. This book is action packed and hard to put down. It has more violence than what I prefer but is still very good.

If you love pirate adventures with a modern daY twist for treasure hunting you will love this book. It brings history to life in an exciting fashion.

Quick read that stretched belief a little. I still like Logan Dodge and enjoy the Key West setting but the pirate treasure storyline was hard to believe.
