I have to admit I'm a sucker for gekiga AND psychedelic patterns so I'll easily sing the praises of this nearly dialogue free freak poem from Garo great Sakabashira. Unlike Yokoyama, who seems to be the critics current favorite with respect to spacing and travel, Saka-san was doing this many years before, as evident by this book's first half. A homeless errand runner and his Saturday morning cartoon cat are delivering a box through a maze of shredded paper and pipes and rubber with the police, sewer monsters and the comic panel itself closing in on them. Don't get lost, there's an awful lot of shading. It's a fast read, but not without a purpose. It boasts a wonderful centerpiece of several different exploitation-style images in a variety of styles, one per page, for the course of most of this books' center, before going on, delivering the mysterious, crabby package and...well, I won't spoil it. This comic will make your head spin with its speed and delivery & squeeze your amygdala with its low-brow, psychedelic monsters. It rules.The one thing I have to critique is the packaging. Don't get all hurt, I love D&Qs hardcover decisions, and this one is no different, except the content begs to be enlarged. Really, I think this would hugely benefit from an over sized, hardcover printing, if only to better frame those freaky centerpiece pics; something like a coffee-table book. The art is worthy of it, honestly, and when he's good, he's real good, as these centerpieces are close to Suehiro Maruo level awesomeness!If you like psych art and travel and cats, this is a must.

A man on a moped with a box on the back and an odd Pokemon-type creature at his side cruises past an alien landscape alongside typical Japanese architecture. Except things are a bit off - monsters and half-man creatures are everywhere, the police are after him for harbouring a lobster-type creature in his box, and a disturbing-looking little bald dude with sunglasses is voyeuristically watching as monsters wrestle with humans.What the hell is going on? I don't know, but it's an interesting little book. It's mostly wordless and there are loads of psychedelic scenes which reminded me of Jim Woodring's work, and some of the monster/human scenes looked like straight out of a Charles Burns book.But besides a few well-drawn pages and a feeling of unreality throughout, I didn't get much out of the book. It's too weird, too all over the place, to really make much of an impression and the lack of coherent storytelling made it less interesting to read rather than more. I appreciate Drawn & Quarterly putting out alternative comics from Japan but I wouldn't say this was the best pick as it raises too many questions without answering any, so it's frustrating to read rather than enjoyable.

Some things don't make narrative sense, at least on the surface, but nonetheless provide a wild aesthetic ride. "The Box Man," a gekiga manga that originally appeared in 2004, will likely perplex, or possibly disgust, anyone who scans its vibrant surreal landscape. Yet something remains undeniably compelling throughout the entire mad journey. Almost none of the manga's drawings contain dialog. The quaint "du du du du" of the main character's scooter dominates the soundscape. Phantasmagorical and sometimes graphically violent imagery dots the tale as the man on a scooter and his companion, presumably a half kappa creature, putter along various scenes to who knows where. The artwork shines throughout and, for many who choose to complete this ineffable little book, may provide the dominant reason for carrying on despite the increasingly inexplicable events that unfold. And then there's the intriguing little box with the crab claws.Right away the story takes a surreal turn. The man and his creature companion get blown off course by a Godzilla-esque creature that leaps from a river. Their scooter crashes and ignites, but they soon obtain another one from a man sitting in a vast junkyard listening to baseball. The pair rides along through what looks like an early to mid-twentieth century Japanese city. Everything seems half abandoned and Kanji litters the walls of the dilapidated industrial scene. They ride through a corridor of the city as wires and pipes slither out from ceilings and walls. An immense train blocks their path momentarily. Things seem to go fine, though the scenery becomes more bleak, until the scooter's front wheel jettisons off on an elevated walkway and the duo plunge into a web of brittle wires. The strange box shows itself for the first time. A human face peeks out, followed by crab claws. The man slams it shut and the trip continues on foot through the murky nightmarish streets.Police try to stop them, but the crab claws behead one of the officers and appears to castrate the other. They flee with the box into a side street that takes them to hallways lined with highly ornate, but also highly creepy, carved ancient artwork. A small floating head speaks in pictographs and leads them to a larger masked body who seems to get angry at the pair's lack of response. The box comes to the rescue by producing a psychedelic frog. This apparently allows them to continue and they pass through a 1950s - 1960s style Japanese home, complete with television, nick-knacks and a two-headed pig. The hallways lead them to a series of rooms where a strange clown-like creature gleefully watches a series of monsters abusing women in various ways. A fiendish chipmunk holds a Japanese schoolgirl in a painful wrestling hold. A smiling science fiction monster twists the legs of a woman wearing hot pants and stockings. One incomprehensible monster drools over the head of a pinned down woman. A slithery slimy monster covered in tentacles grasps a girl wearing what looks like military dress and tickles her armpits. Other women get coiled in lizard tails, pulled up by their underwear or covered in worms. Later, men also succumb to the grisly tortures. The clown-like man watches all of this with great joy. One of the women escapes and beats the clownish man until his brains spill from his head, but the man pursues the woman and splatters his brains all over her head. It then appears that these scenes actually occurred in a film that all of the monsters and the clownish man laugh at while seated in a room with snacks.The scooter man and his companion witnessed all of this behind the scenes and now they try to creep past the group unnoticed, but, horrifyingly, one of the monsters spots them and they follow them. After a series of somewhat unexplainable events in which it appears that the monsters have enjoyed tormenting the pair, the crab claws once again save the day. The monsters get a taste of their own cruelty and after two of them get spit out by a giant mass, they chase the pair enraged. As luck would have it, they come across another scooter, presumably stolen from a man engrossed in karaoke. His song lyrics resemble Thai. Another chase ensues and the pair cruise by a table of policemen. They gaze at a wanted poster with a picture of the pair on it and instantly recognize them. A monster bites the head off of a policeman and the policeman shoot the monster in turn. This leaves a single police car pursuing the scooter over rooftops and past advertisements for "The Wasp Woman" and various foods and medicines. They eventually lose the police and continue on down a shoreline. The scenery becomes less cluttered until the scooter stops before a mosh pit of imagery. Framed by what looks like a fallen battleship and covered with icons of pop culture and other indescribable things, the overstimulating cacophonic scene appears vomited up from the depths of a half horrifying, half pleasurable melange of iniquity.The man on the scooter than takes off his glasses, revealing a starkly realistic face. He then opens the box and a part crab part human creature emerges. The human part of the creature resembles an old bearded man in what looks like traditional Japanese dress. Then, in an almost Darth Vader moment, the scooter man addresses the monstrosity as "father." He then tells his father that since he has become half crab he has become too decadent and so will leave him in the "sea of decadence." Then, leaving his poor kappa companion behind, the man rides off on his scooter. The crab man grabs the kappa creature and heads towards the morass of decadence laughing. The end.Perhaps this story just appeared piecemeal from the author's head and he followed it where it took him. In other words, "The Box Man" may just represent an experiment in stream of consciousness comics. Sort of a manga equivalent of David Lynch's "Eraserhead." Obviously, some people will appreciate this effort more than others. The book reads like a vivid dream and its drawings often produce real shock. But it also feels like a rejection of some sort. The scooter man abandons his father and the kappa creature in what resembles a miasma of shallow popular culture hedonism. Along the way they react to the scenery, especially the macabre chambers of monster tortures, with anger and horror. Maybe the scooter man has rejected the culture in which his father has raised him? His father, now a monster of sorts, has become uncontrollable, so the man just decides to abandon him and go his own way. The journey to the "sea of decadence" allows the reader to witness the man's disillusionment. The final scene represents the man's declaration of independence from what his father has come to symbolize. Other possible interpretations obviously exist, but it remains difficult to deny that something has definitely gone wrong in this world."The Box Man" will not please everyone. Some may find it deliberately obscure or accuse it of "weirdness for the sake of weirdness." Fair enough. Others may find the drawings and narrative a fount of symbolism and meaning and try to pick apart just what this visually appealing but largely unpleasant story attempts to communicate. Those seeking a challenge or simply looking for something different will find it here. Similar to most art, it will speak to some and repel others. And that's probably how it should be.

I purchased this book without knowing much about it. My expectation was that it would relate in some detail how we use metaphorical language in a subconscious manner to describe the experiences of our lives. And my expectation turned out to be woefully insufficient to cover the reality of what the book delivered. To wit, my expectation was met and exceeded.Lakoff and Johnson do not only discuss how we use metaphorical language absentmindedly in our day-to-day living, but also delve into how we utilize metaphor to structure, conceptualize, and share our understanding of reality. It might not be obvious what exactly is the difference. In effect, the authors argue that metaphor is not just a matter of language, but a process of internally organizing our understanding of the external world. The first half of the book makes the positive case that our perceptions of reality are built upon metaphor. The second half of the book makes the case that other philosophical views fail to adequately account for such conceptual structuring. In the end, the authors argue that an "experientialist" view of truth and meaning not only account for our metaphorical comprehension of reality, but also retain and unite the most compelling aspects of other schools of thought that fail to do so.I think the first half of the book is a roaring success. The authors provide many and thorough examples of how our understanding of reality is structured metaphorically and how these metaphorical concepts are organized into coherent systems. They provide an explanation of why some mixed metaphors work and why others appear absurd. The idea that some arguments are covered in gargoyles, for example, shall stick with me for some time.I think the second half of the book is a bit less successful. Bear in mind, I am not well-versed in the philosophy of language nor am I well-acquainted with the objectivist and subjectivist views described by the authors. However, their argument seems to falter along one glaring fault (because an argument is a building, you see). The authors appear to assert in an absolute and unconditional manner that there are no absolute and unconditional truths. I want to be charitable here and assume that the authors were merely being careless, and that they meant something different than what they appear to be saying. However, the theme is repeated several times throughout the rest of the book, so it's difficult to tell.The difficulty ought to be obvious. At some level, there must be some kind of objective truth if we are to make anything resembling an objective truth claim -- even those fundamental claims about truth itself. I suspect that the authors are more inclined to affirm that truth cannot be communicated between individuals in an objective manner -- hence, the significant focus on language -- but their claims are stronger than that. If they intend only to claim, say, that we cannot exhaustively describe in an absolute and unconditional manner all (or even most) objective truths concerning reality, I'd be much more persuaded to hop on board. Instead, the authors seem to blunder at this crucial step. It's possible they clarify such a stance in the afterword (which I did not read), in which case this criticism may widely miss its mark. Otherwise, it appears quite fatal.There's another criticism I could leverage - namely, that the authors appear to view human interest in truth as based in its survival value (if that were true, we wouldn't have books like _Metaphors We Live By_) - but I'm not convinced the book was aimed at defending such a position. On a positive note, I thought the authors' attempt to wed objective and subjective accounts of truth into a unified view were admirable and reached closer to the mark than a strict objectivist or subjectivist account of reality. As such, on the whole, I liked the book. It was pretty good. But I also think the ultimate argument is the kind of thing that either says too little to justify such length and breadth of discussion or says too much to be taken seriously. For those interested, it should at the least be read for its delightful and rigorous first half.

I felt chained to every chapter, struggling to find even a sliver of the gold that was the first eleven.Buy this book. Invest in the first eleven. Skim the last nineteen. It's well worth your time.

Holy cow everything we didn't know we needed to know about metaphors and their affect on people, highly recommend for anyone in speech writing, public speaking etc George Lakoff is a well of knowledge, and an advisor to political campaigning in the past. This is a good introduction to how we use metaphors and what they emphasize and simultaneously hide. Lakoff and Johnson also give you a deeper look into the philosophy behind language and it's affect on our relationship to the world.

Difficult book to get through from cover to cover. They make some interesting points that make you think differently about our ways of speaking and doing things here and there, but on the whole I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Very boring and many of their core ideas I disagree completely with.

Good understanding of metaphors and how we use them. People who read a lot about language will like this book. Others may find it difficult to read and understand.

Marc Elliot writes excellent biographies. Having read a few, the Grant bio sheds light on a very popular actor. You might not like the characterGrant developed but he was very entertaining on the screen.

The "Real" Cary Grant....still impressive..trying so hard.........but still affected by his upbringing... a serious look behind the scenes of his career in the Movies and Life

I love Cary Grant. This is a fun read, gossipy but not unfriendly. Not many photos in the Kindle version. It was first published in 2004.

Excellent book for serious fans of the history of film and Hollywood as well as English actors. Informative. Couldn't put it down.

Excellent book. Well written and researched, gives a realistic, sympathetic picture of the man.

Interesting background material on film industry in 1940's-70's as well as some intriguing insights into the person who became Cary Grant. I didn't find it compelling reading, finished it mainly because it was book of the month for my local book clip.

This book was well researched and written. Many of the movies and events of Mr. Cary Grant's life were presented in more detail than most of us normal fans have ever experienced. And that is my one caution about the book - if you have loved and hold dear the Cary Grant mystique and "image" some of us have carried with us our entire lives, you may want to pass on this book. Why - well, it does reveal negatives about Mr. Grant's personality and include his negative evaluation and attitudes regarding some of the movies that otherwise have historically been highly regarded. On the other hand, there are some omissions. For example, while the autobiography of Ginger Rogers clearly discusses a relationship with Mr. Grant - but it is not mentioned in this book. And, while some of us have cherished "An Affair to Remember" and "Charade," there is little discussion of the "making of" and Mr. Grant's attitudes toward these classics - a disappointment for this reader. But if you want clearly written detail about the most of the early, middle, and late life of Cary Grant, this is the book for you.

I definitely recommend this biography!! Cary Grant has always appealed to me, by way of his quiet class and awesome acting ability! No one likes to know there are "dark sides" to their heroes, however, I am now aware of his struggles, bad marriages and other gossip as pertains to Him. You may feel shock and astonishment, but that will not make you love him less. In fact, you begin to understand and know Him better, love him more, and be reminded that we are not to judge one another. I found this biography to be a wonderful insight into who I consider the most charming, classy, loving actor of all time!

What on earth can one say about a seminal book that has changed the world, in the quietest, most unobtrusive way, under the radar and with incredible stealth? hmmm... I shall give it a go, and the reader will forgive my ineptitude!I have downloaded this little puppy on my kindle, so I can easily read this huge (and I mean huuuugggge) book without it breaking my knee, but I have ready it several times, in my life, and I think I am just getting a handle on it!For those of you who don't know, this book came about after a heart-felt plea for a "better way" to be revealed. The author, and her colleague were working at a highly prestigious and highly competitive college in New York, where the back-biting and negativity was literally frustrating and draining them. Shortly thereafter, Helen Schucman began to take notes, which eventually became A Course In Miracles.ACIM is basically three books in one, a text, a work book and a text for teachers. The premise is that most of us have been indoctrinated via our culture and society to think in hate-filled, non-loving, competitive ways, and that this is a kind of insanity. In order to return to sanity, we must retrain our minds and remove the outer layer of indoctrination. Underneath all of this, lying unconcerned and unsullied, lies the eternal love which is our true nature. We asked not to seek love, but instead seek all the blocks to its awareness inside.The Course is not the only way to do this, but it is one very powerful way that I believe works best with the western, educated mind. It slowly buffs away the callouses of the ego, until we can see ourselves revealed within. We actively do this by employing the workbook lessons, and having some understanding of the basics of the text.However, that said, it can take years for this wisdom to seep into every corner of the mind. I still find myself reading a passage that I have read before, only to see something so profound, so amazing, that it blows my mind. I did not see it before, because clearly I had resistance to it. So the whole thing becomes a bit of a journey, to say the least.Of course, from my perspective, what other "course" can be worthwhile?When I first came across ACIM some fifteen odd years ago, I found it incredibly annoying. I found myself unable to read it, and wanting to trash the book. Luckily I had the insight to wonder why it raised such anger because it was, after all, just a book. Then, over time, and searching the internet I found many others had a similar experience. One woman was so flustered by the concepts in the book, that she stopped her car on a busy bridge, during rush house, ran out and threw the book into the icy river below.When I read that I just knew that there was something in this book that I wanted to find and wanted to know.ACIM is not a quick read (to say the least!) but if you are ready and if you can get past your initial resistance (the ego is pretty tricky!!!) this book can and will change your life. Think about it and be patient and loving with yourself, because this journey leads home little prodigal!Enjoy!

I'm a big fan of Course In Miracles. I love that the author uses love and religion as its main themes, and combines it with modern spirituality. The only reason I gave the book, (not the content) four stars, is because it could have been written in half the words, and preferably not having it strictly narrated from Christ's point of view. We know that that is what the author actually believed, but it would have been more respectful to Christ himself, if, she had given Him a bit of a leeway instead of being so absolute. And Of course the prose is extremely wordy, and truthfully, a beautiful subject like this one, could have been explained in half the pages.But if you don't mind the wordiness, and repetitive use of language, which at times can be confusing, go for it. Especially if you're looking for a spiritual journey that differs from the others, and goes just a tad a deeper.

Truly the most uplifting and encouraging book thus far, and I am an avid reader. You need to get through the first 2-4 chapters to have some of the concepts click. It is well worth it in every way. It has enhanced my life and my husband is now on chapter 7 and loves it. It is simple, yet profound. I name this my "bible" it is so good. You will never regret reading this book and will have a more peaceful, joyful, fun life applying the guidance written--it speaks to the depths of your heart and soul.

As channeled material goes it's a little wordy but if you peservere the message does come through. I had heard about this book for ever and finally decided to tackle it. I find that if you read it slowly and give it time that it reveals itself quite nicely.I highly recommend Conversations With God as well.

Reading this little book is like opening the windows and seeing the stars for the first time. Open your mind and know the truth, and let this little book show you how.

I am a total fan girl of Joanna, but this book left for more to be desired. Of course the spaces were beautiful but the book was more of a picture book / sample of Joanna's work than a guide. Yes there were a few pointers for each of the rooms, things to consider, but definitely far less than I expected from my experience with other style books. I would wait for this book to be available at your local library, instead of buying it.

I have to say I really love the designs on "Fixer Upper", and I really like Chip & Jo. That said, I have a problem with the lack of color in this book. White, black, gray, neutral. Over and over, and they start to blend together. Finally got some color at the kid's section... Yay! I do like what she has to say about design, and making your home work for you.Overall, not enough variety in the designs, and waaaay to much neutral.

 Great Design book! Heavy and well made with beautiful pictures and in great detail. Glad I bought it so many ideas. Currently building our home and excited to incorporate this book in our dream home.

This book is made to last; meaning, the binding and spine are tight and sturdy. This means that you cannot open this book carelessly: you must open the book and ‘break it in’ with purpose and care, so that the binding and leaves last a lifetime.To do this:1. Stand the book vertically, with the spine on a flat surface2. Open both the front cover and back cover, so that they lie flat3. Alternately open a few pages from the front and back, gently pressing along the seam, working your way towards the middle4. Work the book in this way a few times, so that the spine expands and opens up. You’ll find it much easier to read after this.On another note: this book’s purpose is to TEACH you how to Identify styles and motifs that you enjoy, and is a companion on your journey to figure out what YOU enjoy-it’s an exercise in critical thinking. Yes, the photos are mostly neutral, and you may think that the photos do not have enough color. However, you should not take this as a disappointment for the book. In fact, a congratulations is in order- you succeeded in what the goal of the book was- to teach you to indentify what YOU like and dislike. This isn’t a ‘pick and choose’ catalogue- it’s a textbook. And it’s a fantastic textbook

I just received my copy and obviously have not read it cover to cover, but I can already tell this is a great book. First off, the quality is incredible. It makes a beautiful coffee table book and will look just as nice sitting on your bookcase. The pages are matte and not glossy, (no glare) which makes it easier to really study the images and capture the true sense of the shot. Joanna encourages you to study the pictures to help you uncover your personal style and what you gravitate towards. This book really makes a wonderful gift. As for the content of the book itself, we’ll, what can I say? It’s also incredible. I love, love, love the format and how she divides the book according to different rooms in your house: Living, dining, entry, bedrooms.. etc. Each room has a short troubleshooting section where she describes common pitfalls that keep it from looking it’s best. The book also gives plenty of examples to help you narrow down your design style. The most unique thing about Homebody has to be the fold-out design template at the back of the book. The purpose of the design template is to help you put your plan into action. She describes how to use the template to help you identify trouble areas, sketch the basic layout of your space, and develop your action plan. There’s even a link so you can print additional templates as needed!! Joanna thought of everything. This book is different from other design books because it isn’t just filled with pretty pictures, it truly is a guide to creating a space you love. Again, I just quickly skimmed through the book, but I am thoroughly impressed and can’t wait to really sit down with it and put her suggestions to work!

A lot of the pictures are from homes she did on her show , fixer upper, but she still has some wonderful ideas. I have always loved her style . She mixes antiques with new, industrial styles and I think it’s classic and beautiful. Her style seems authentic to me . I’m building a house and can’t wait to incorporate some of her ideas in to my new home !!! I love Joanna !

Bought this for my wife for our anniversary. The book is very high quality and it’s so smart how they did this. The book explains styles and what makes something modern vs. farm house - in a very clear format. She loves it and I do too.

Very disappointed with this book. Everything is dull and boring. The subtitle is a guide to creating spaces you never want to leave. I haven't found one space in the book that I'd even want in my home, much less never want to leave. I have love Joanna's decorating on her shows, but this book is a big let down. Save your money.

This book is perfect if you wish to learn to make your own log furniture or if you just want to learn how about how it’s done. There are lots of great tips and tricks from selecting wood to prepping it to working with it.Being an novice woodworker my skills have a lot to be desired for making good looking furniture but with what I see in this book I can make pieces that will at least be functional with a rustic look. A rustic look can be nice in the right setting.I can also use the info in this book for making gifts for friends and relatives. Who doesn’t need a foot stool or a really cool coat rack. While I learn on those I can build my skill set for making other things.

I have read several books on Rustic Log Furniture, and to me, this one was the best! It better explains the peeling of bark process, regional woods to choose from, and simplifies the tools needed, simplifies the steam bending process, as well as giving the reader several adaptions to make rustic furniture.

Good information, easy to understand and not overly complicated. A good book for anyone wanting to try their hand at building log furniture.

From Tree to Table is a tutorial guide from woodworker and outdoorsman Alan Garbers. Released 22nd Jan 2019 by Fox Chapel, it's 152 pages and available in paperback format.There is a philosophical concept (widely represented in a lot of different cultures) that says that the act of making an object (especially handmaking) imbues it with a 'thusness'. The fact that each piece of handmade furniture is unique (even if the crafter is aiming for conformity) gives it personality. Rustic decoration has become very popular the last years. I believe this is in direct response to decades of disposable cookie-cutter furniture. Handmade goods are generally more solid and well made than mass produced items and they are certainly more pleasing to live with and use.This author 'gets it'. This book is full of personal anecdotes and tips from his experiences building furniture himself.The book is split into sections. Each section is further divided into project chapters. Part 1 covers introductory how-to and tools. Besides a very basic chapter included covering safety and equipment, there are lots of technique and info sections on wood as a medium, why it behaves the way it does, how to form and shape it, sourcing and evaluating materials, etc.Part 2 has the furniture tutorials. There are 7 moderately advanced projects up to and including a bed-frame. There is also a short bibliography and index. The project tutorials presuppose a level of familiarity with woodworking and access to tools. This is a lovely book, full of beautiful photographs of rustic furniture in a room setting. I would recommend it not only to woodworkers looking for a challenge, but also as inspiration to readers wishing to source custom crafted furniture.Five stars.Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

We live in Northeastern Oklahoma very near a commercial sawmill so had been tinkering with some short cuts and mill ends but really needed some guidance. This book gives wonderful background on what to expect when working with fresh cuts and how to best take care of your heirloom quality furniture. It's a great introduction or refresher to anyone working with wood.

Incredibly thorough book for anyone who wants to get serious about building log furniture. Full color photos and step by step instructions. Covers mistakes the author made, too, which is nice to save others from repeating them.
