Grade 4 Up–In the late 1980s, DC Comics revamped many superheroes but realized that Batman should remain true to his 1939 history. The remaining chapters highlight Gordon's continuing difficulties with the corrupt police force, Batman's early difficulties in protecting and using his arsenal of weapons, and the first villains he chooses to pursue. At the end of the book, readers are treated to some background on Mazzucchelli's art, the production of Year One, and details on Richmond Lewis's coloring techniques. Jim Gordon is a BAMF in this short book by Frank Miller. I really like to colors too. It's a good read if you're into Batman or comics in general.

So you want to start reading Batman comics? I bet you've searched all over the internet, on sites such as comic vine, youtube, yahoo answers, and they all tell you the same thing: Start with Batman: Year One. Why start with this book? Well, this review will explain everything: The cover, the artwork, the extra features, the story, and what I recommend you read next. Without further ado, let us begin. Once upon a time, there was a man named Frank Miller. In 1986, Frank wrote a little story called The Dark Knight Returns. This critically acclaimed alternate-universe novel featured Miller's revolutionary interpretation of Batman. Shortly after, he was asked to write something else. Anything. He took a very general route: a Batman origin story. Little did he know, this 4-issue story would become a classic, essential Batman collection. Batman Year One collects Batman issues 404-407 into one remastered collection, complete with bonus features of extra artwork, preludes, afterwords, etc. Here is a breakdown of the book's contents:- A one page long newspaper clipping titled The Crime Blotter written by Slam Bradley, the original star of Detective Comics #1, perhaps as a homage to him.- A 2 page introduction by Dennis O'Neil from March 1988 explaining how the idea for Batman Year one was introduced.- The 97 page long story itself. More on that later.- A 37 page afterword(s) complete with original sketches, the process of remastering the color, original scripts, black and white artwork, etc.- An advertisement at the end for other graphic novels, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Haunted Knight, and Catwoman: When in Rome, all by the Dynamic Duo of comics whose names aren't Batman and Robin, Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale. Perhaps DC is trying to tell us something...The story itself is phenomenal. I'm not going to spoil anything, but here's a little opening to draw you in: Lieutenant James Gordon has been called in to work in Gotham City. During the train ride there, we learn of his opinions towards his new workplace. He complains about the long ride, the scummy people, the lousy effort of the police force in a mob-ruled city, how he knows it will be difficult to raise his family. Think Detroit. While there, he learns of the corrupt Gotham police force, and the return of Bruce Wayne, a millionaire playboy who inherited his dead parents' wealth by default. Bruce himself is struggling mentally. He wants to become a vigilante, a self-appointed crime fighter, but he lacks one minor thing: others simply won't fear him. It finally dawns to him that he should become what he feared, a bat. Cover art for the book is basic. That's all it has to be. A red book with a sketch of Batman that stretches from front to back cover (I purchased the paperback version) The story hits everyone differently. If your memory of Batman is the Adam West, joke-cracking pun-filled crime fighter, this story will come as a shock to you. You may have to read the story a second time before you can really appreciate it. It is very dark, filled with blood, cheating, alcohol, prostitutes, and drugs. What I'm trying to get at here is that this isn't a story to read to your kids at bed time. Nevertheless, it is still a masterpiece. Speaking of masterpieces, David Mazzucchelli absolutely nails it on the artwork. It focuses a lot on lighting and shadows, perfect for the noir mood of the story. It also focuses on little, tiny details, the lining of the bricks of the apartment building being staked out by a psychopath, the raindrops on Gordon's car window, the debris of the collapsed house Batman uses to hide from the police (yes, I just said that, Batman hiding from the police) The story occasionally switches narration between Batman, Jim Gordon, and Catwoman. The amount of use of this tool can be what makes or breaks a story. Miller balanced it perfectly. There are no "supercriminals" so to speak, no Joker, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze; just the mob, police force, and some no-named petty thieves. After all, it's just Batman's first year. It broadcasts the successes, failures, and luck of Batman. All-in-all, it was a fantastic read. It's really something you can read again and again. This book will start you comic/TPB collection, and hopefully it will be a long one. You will see some connections to the Nolan films in this book, as it played a vital role as inspiration for Batman Begins. Upon putting this book down, it immediately poses another question: Where to next? Perhaps you didn't like this new spin on the Batman. Maybe you want a more vibrant kid friendly version. I would suggest picking up Batman: Chronicles Volume 1 or Batman: Archives. They are a collection of older Batman comics from the Gold, Silver, and Bronze age. Perhaps you did like this Batman and what to further oversee his development into the Dark Knight. Batman Year One in my opinion is the starting point for the modern age Batman. If this interests you, I'd pick up at least one of the following graphic novels:- Batman the Long Halloween - a murder-mystery spanning over a year- Batman: Dark Victory - an intended sequel for The Long Halloween, introduction of Dick Grayson AKA Robin- Batman Haunted Knight - a collection of 3 Batman short stories- Catwoman: When in Rome - further reading on Catwoman- Batman: The Man who Laughs - introduction to the Joker- Batman and the Monster Men - my recommendation if you want to read Batman in a chronological order. However, it is very expensive at this time on amazon.- Legends of the Dark Knight - a comic series consisting of several batman short stories, no order is required, though some are sequels to others.- Anything you firggin' want - no explanation needed.I payed $8 for the book via Amazon, and it was a steal. If you see the book for under 10 bucks, don't hesitate to pick it up. I hoped I helped all you new readers, or veterans who never read this your time around. 5/5 stars, 100/5 stars, actually. It doesn't matter. Read it if you haven't. You won't regret it.

There's likely nothing more that can be written about how fantastic this Batman story is. Frank Miller published this very soon after his monumental Dark Knight Returns series, except this story was to take place within the main DC continuity. Following in the vein of TDKR, Year One reinvented and rejuvenated the Batman mythos. However, I think this book outclasses Dark Knight Returns on a few levels.Firstly, the art is vastly superior to TDKR. Frank Miller can write, but his art talent has rarely appealed to me. It's inconsistent, messy, and filled with many bizarre figures. His Batman looks imposing and dark, but is surrounded with mediocrity. David Mazzucchelli, on the other hand, draws everything with stunning, sleek realism, capturing Miller's troubled Gotham and the young Bruce Wayne like no other. While not the most detailed work, it works efficiently and propels the reader through the story with gripping visuals. Despite the simplistic style, it's never cartoonish. This is some mature material, and the art reflects this. Included in this title are several early renderings from Mazzucchelli, as well as some of his commentary. It is almost enough art to be considered a second Year One.The writing is, of course, superb. Miller's TDKR Batman is gruff and callous, befitting of an older Wayne. Miller writes the young vigilante just as well, showing that he is driven in his mission by pain, yet still carrying a sense of empathy for others, even criminals. Gordon is the other highlight of this story, showing the yet-to-be commissioner as tough, vulnerable, and not as squeaky clean as his ideals. Jim Gordon has always been an important character in Batman, likely in the top four, following only Alfred, Joker, and Robin. Jim experiences, and is susceptible to, temptation. Showing that he is human does not take away from his heroic nature, but rather makes him more of a three-dimensional character. Wayne and Gordon both begin their time in Gotham intent on cleaning up the city, but obviously in very different manners. This parallel journey introduces the bond these two will forge, and the eternal boundary that will separate them.This is my favorite Batman story, surpassing TDKR with ease. Here, Batman's a hero, plain and simple. He's not afraid to use intimidation and violence, but he's undoubtedly one of the good guys. the writing and art is top notch, the standard for which all good comics should be held. Yes, it's an origin story, but it's an origin story like no other. At less than $10, I can't think of a better Batman comic to be purchased.

Basis story of my favorite character possibly ever. Not necessary if you're jumping into a specific version, like DC Rebirth or DC The New 52. But feels almost timeless you could say, being a detective story at its core. I enjoy it more and get more out of it each time i read it. It isn't just about Bruce Wayne becoming Batman though but also a genesis to cat woman and Jim Gordon. Beautiful muted-color art. Considered one of the best generally speaking. And for very good reason. But there's no campyness in the slightest, much action compared to other batman tales or any of the villians from Gotham that wwe all know and love. Consider yourself warned because for 17 year old me, this proved to be a disappointment when i first read it. But i'm glad i've stuck with it and have decided to re-read it various times since then

David Farrell, M.S.W., L.N.H.A., is Director of Organizational Development and Regional Director of Operations for a private nursing home management firm in California. He has served as a licensed nursing home administrator in the long-term care profession for 25 years. As a nationally known leader in quality improvement and culture change, Farrell has documented the business case for providing a positive work environment and translated research about good leadership into daily practice. A published author and former board member of the Pioneer Network, he has delivered inspiring presentations to long-term care leaders at state conferences and corporate training events in nearly every state. While working for state Quality Improvement Organizations, he played a lead role in the National Nursing Home Quality Initiative. Farrell also served on the faculty team for the national Improving the Nursing Home Culture project involving QIOs and national nursing home corporations in 21 states. He has advised the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on quality improvement and culture change.

This is a great book for LTC Administrators and DONs. I think even corporate leadership should read this book. Great ideas and lessons to be learned or polished when running a facility!

I am still in the process of reading this book. I really enjoy reading about his day-to-day struggles and some of the solutions he comes up with. I can relate to so many of these challenges. It is really difficult to put down when I do get a chance to sit down and read. Very realistic.

This book contains lots of great ideas and best practices for leaders in Long Term Care. A must read for nursing home administrators. This book will get you out of your office and into the halls of your nursing home with many tools for successful outcomes.

This was an easy reading book.

A beautiful book with characters I have grown to love and admire. I'll Be Your Blue Sky is the the third book in the trilogy that began with Love Walked In, although I feel like this can be read as a standalone book (but if you have not read the first two books, you are missing out - they are just as wonderful!). I had missed Clare, Dev, Teo, and Cornelia and loved catching up with them in this heartbreakingly beautiful story. We are also introduced to Edith, who turns out to be the character who is enchanting, mysterious, wise, and just a lovely human being. Marisa de los Santos has been an author that I will turn to no matter what she writes, and this book just adds to my love of her characters and writing. Her way with words is like no other and her gift of giving her characters such a rich, full life makes me wish I could meet them in person. I loved this book.

I read an average of a book a day. I read fantasy (not sci-fi), mystery/crime, "psychological thrillers" and "women's fiction". I don't really care much for romance but will read it if I have nothing else. Because I read so much, I won't buy books at full price ($7.99 - $13.99 is usual for the authors that I like best) and BookBub is my friendly "book finder". This book was a suggestion that I had not picked up on Monday, but decided to try yesterday out of desperation. Usually, I read the negative reviews of a book before choosing to make sure the book isn't a cliffhanger or full of errors in grammar and spelling, but this time I didn't read any reviews because I didn't have anything good to read. I had started several books that weren't holding my interest, so I was just ready to try something, anything, out of desperation. I am so glad I did and so glad I didn't read those very few negative reviews. I really loved this book. If you check my reviews, you'll find that I don't do a lot of book reviews and, when I do, it's usually because I get really aggravated with authors who think they can just use spell check and skip the cost of a proof reader and/or editor. This results in really silly things like mis up of "there", "their", and "they're", and other such easily fixed goofs. I will certainly go and find more of this author's books and read them. Thank you, Ms. de los Santos! P.S. Just went to find more of her books. Unfortunately, none of them fit into my self-imposed book budget. :-(

I love this writer and her stories never disappoint. There were a lot of names (for me) introduced in the first chapter or so and it took me a while to sort everyone out. I'm so glad I stuck with it because the story was exceptionally engaging. You'll go back and forth in time with the stories of two young couples - one destined to be together, the other more troubling to imagine. Each complicated life unfolds with a surprising connection between the two women. I don't want to give anything away! But I enjoyed the many faces of love, from romantic connections, to unconditional familial devotion, to the depth and warmth of love between friends.

There's always something in a Marisa de Los Santos book that touches your heart. This novel tracks two women you fall in love with - one young and starting, the other much older and near the end of her life (though you'll get to know her young and in love too). Great mystery tangled around the connection between them is an important part of the book

Wait. This is not just a love story, it is a true loves story and these people are a joy to be with. It’s plot involves a complex mystery to unravel. Lovely.

This book was so painful to read! Initially the character of Clare was so poorly developed - it took until about the middle of the book to figure out her age, what she did (absolutely nothing?), what her life was about, etc. that it was hard to relate to her. And then when you figure out she's 20ish and willing to marry some abusive jerk (who is said to be redeeming but never is), and seems to have no responsibilities in the world at all, she's even harder to relate to. And the writing is just off - here Clare is so supposedly consumed by Edith's story, yet she is living in her old house and doesn't bother to go through all her things? And so many conversations just don't sound natural (Dev: hey your Facebook account has some stuff that made me fear for your life! Clare: Oh? Well I'm 20 and can text but don't have Wi-Fi so I can't check FB. And hey, why are you checking my FB? Oh sure, I'll mosey over to the library to take a look-see but not bother to ask what it says.) So annoying! Too bad, thought the premise could have been fun if it was delivered well.

Loved this! Will look for more books by this author. The story unfolded slowly and kept my interest every minute, the details were fresh and not the usual formula for this type of book, following two different characters through their interconnecting story. All the characters were fully fleshed out and even the "bad guy" was understandable and sympathetically drawn. Sorry it ended!

Great Books and a great price.I have been collecting these books for my 2 year old daughter so that when the time comes I can give her a huge set of these.I remember having these books when I was little and loved reading them.

This is a fun book to read because it is simple and there are a lot of fun sounds. Pictures are fun too.

My Grandson likes it when I make the different sounds written on the pages of this book. It isn't very long which is good because Grandson doesn't have a very long attention span right now.

However it doesn't really do justice to what you are going to experience. For your traveler's vocabulary you really need an audio source - online.

Fairly basic guide - look for something a bit more substantial

These e-books are informative travel guides that help you learn things like where to eat and what the best sights to see are. Some of the phrases might need a little practice, but it's a step in the right direction if I ever decided to visit Beijing. There is a guide to follow that tells you good places to eat, visit and get the most fun out of your trip. I loved seeing the photos included, makes me want to go visit. This review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

I love reading bits from this interesting book - it reminds me of my days in Beijing. The irony is that my knowledge of Beijing is less than half of what this book covers. Well, I guess I have been absent for too long. I think I am gonna use this book for my next long over-due trip to Beijing to rediscover the charm of this ancient yet modern city.

This could have been as good a guide for beginners as many reviews here claim it to be, but it suffers from one fatal flaw: there are no maps to guide you with any precision. There is only one map that basically amounts to pointing out east, west, north, and south parts of the city. However, there is no map to locate the neighborhoods recommended for shopping or staying or sight seeing. In other words, while this guide can be a useful reminder to those already familiar with Beijing, it is considerably less useful to those unfamiliar with the city.

No real information about Beijing beyond the most generic travel advice. Does not have any specifics about sites or history, really not one thing. I read the entire "book" in under 15 minutes.

Good info about touristics atractions. But needs more recomendarions of places to eat, shows to see, places stay and recomendations of how getting to the points of interes.I guess that Fodors would worlk better this time for me....I

Fantastic, in-depth study of the history and potential future of the San Andreas fault.What some thought of as a fault--the deep delve into the topic as well as many related subjects-is one of the things I liked best about this book. As far as I'm concerned, this sort of coverage is one of Simon Winchester's great strengths as a writer.I listened to the audio book, read excellently by the author, before reading the print version. Endlessly fascinating material!

I bought this book to learn how the 1906 San Francisco earthquake ties into the giant Yellowstone "possible cataclysmic devastation" that might happen anytime. Yes, Simon Winchester does have a tie in this book.Simon's writing is crisp, clear and interesting. He sprinkles some humor with lots of factual information of many topics of earthquakes, volcanoes and more. Much more than the San Francisco earthquake. Information on Alaska and the pipeline of today. Information of Plate Tectonics,the different plates that are moving and the various faults around the world. Volcanic Iceland is mentioned. Also a chapter on the evolution of the continents and the far distant past of the Earth.There is information about some of the rich people that lived in San Francisco and the great tenor singer Caruso who was quoted saying "One hellava town" about San Francisco while he was there when the great 1906 Earthquake happened.There is also information of the Chinese immigrants in Chinatown in San Francisco and the terrible racial prejudice against them and the terrible living conditions they had to live in. Also them as "paper people" as their dwellings were destroyed and their addresses lost in the great fire.We see the great fire of San Francisco that destroyed much much more of the city than the earthquake did. We see the poor building construction and lack of adequate fire fighting facilities and equipment that contributed to the almost total loss of the city due to fire after the 1906 earthquake.This book brought forth a history I never heard about in high school or college. Fascinating! There are some very interesting B/W pictures sprinkled throughout the book.We learn that Simon believes that much of the western part of the US and Alaska are tied into earthquake happenings. What happens in one part of the country may influence another. Yellowstone has had 3 major eruptions. The latest about 600,000 years ago and could go at anytime thus wiping out much of the western US and maybe a worldwide cataclysm.We learn that some volcanic eruptions can be predicted with the science of today but there is no sure fire way to predict earthquakes. A fascinating read with lots of different information some of which you may never of heard about. A great book with much more information in it than I expected. 5 stars and recommended.

This is one of several of Simon Winchester's books I have read and none have disappointed me. As a geologist I am probably more familiar with geologic terminology than most, but that should not deter the reader. Unlike many other books about the 1906 California quake Winchester does not treat the event as isolated. He relates it to global tectonics, then North American seismicity and ultimately to California's most infamous fault, the San Andreas. While the west coast is clearly the focus of earthquake interest Winchester describes major earthquakes in Charleston, South Carolina and New Madrid, Missouri; few of us are immune. It is an outgrowth of first-hand experiences during his travels from Iceland across North America and ultimately, to Alaska. It describes not only the litany of disasters in San Francisco, but relates them to the sociology of the time; why houses were poorly constructed, why no one listened to the fire chief's early warnings and how the early growth of the city caused its own demise. Actions of individuals are both praised and condemned for their effects on the stricken population. He describes the events after the quake in human terms and how hubris will undoubtedly lead to future loss of life. More recent quakes, such as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake are also included. During his description of relief efforts for the stricken city I could not help but consider how much quicker and more intense they were than the debacle after Katrina. An appendix describes how earthquake strength is measured. The book is readable, informative and makes you think about how we respond to natural events that can adversely affect us.
